Icelander Fischer on 60 Minutes?

The producers of the US
television program “60 Min-
utes” have contacted the sup-
porters of Bobby Fischer in
Iceland to prepare a segment
on Fischer, who was recently
granted Icelandic citizenship
and arrived in Iceland March
24 after having been in jail in
Japan for about eight months.
The program will be filmed this
spring if it goes ahead.

annual Sumarsagurinn fyrsti Concert at the
Legion Hall, 403 Eveline Street. Doors open

Spanish Fork, Utah: The lcelandic Associa-
tion of Utah celebrates 150 years of lcelandic
settlement in Utah. Amopng the attractions
are a gala dinner with entertainment from lce-
land and lceland Days (exhibits, lamb dinner,

The outspoken Fischer has
caused a great deal of contro-
versy since he arrived in Ice-
land and much has been written

Sigridur (Sigga) Benediktson
1913-2005
On March 18,2005, at the Johnson
Memorial Hospital, Sigga Benediktson-
peacefully passed away at the age of 92
with her loving family at her side.
Sigga was predeceased by her
husband Arnthor in 1972; son Johann
in 1994; daughter-in-law Gloria in 2000;
son-in-law Tony in 2004; parents Maria
and Sigurdur Einarson; siblings Vilhjal-
mur, Einar, Haraldur, Thoroddur, Stanley,
Palmi, Ingvar, Kristjan, Karl, Bergthora
(Tait), Gudrun (Ingimundson), Gudbjorg
(Holm), Olivia (Stefanson), and Adalhei-
dur (Bonser). Sigga was the last surviv-
ing member of the 15 children of the Ein-
arson family of Thorsmork.
Raised and educated in Minerva,
she married Arthur on September 2,
1931. Sigga and Arthur lived on the
farm in Minerva and raised their children
there. The family who lovingly remem-
ber Sigga are: Sheila and her children
Shaunda (Gary), Michael, Kim (John);
Connie (Ralph) and their children Valerie
(Rob), Jo-Ann (Adrian), Marilyn (Jeff),
Laurel (Melvin); Moyra and her chil-
dren Bruce, Susan (Ken), Jeff, Connie
(Bert); Johann’s children Jennifer, Sara
and Erik. Sigga is also survived by 23
great-grandchildren and two great-great-
grandchildren, as well as brothers-in-law
Stefan Stefanson and Sidney Bonser.
Sigga lived her life in service to
others. Family was her first priority, and
cooking was her labour of love. She
shared this talent with the fisherman up
north, at the Department of National De-
fence, and later at the Johnson Memorial
Hospital.
She was a life member of both the
Minerva Ladies Aid and the lcelandic Na-
tional League, as well as a member of
New Horizons and the New Democratic
Party. Sigga truly loved to be with people,
either hosting coffee and dinner parties,
attending other functions, or simply plan-
ning where to go. She was often heard to
ask, “What's next?”
The family would like to express
their heartfelt thanks to Dr. J. Montoedi
and the staff at Gimli Betel and the John-
son Memorial Hospital. A celebration of
Sigga’s life was held on Thursday, March
24 at the Gimli Lutheran Church.
Flowers are gratefully declined. For
those who wish, donations in Sigga’s
memory may be made to the Gimli Betel
Home.

Fanney Victoria Stefansson
On Wednesday, March 16,2005 at
the Health Science Centre, Fanney Ste-
fansson died at the age of 92 years.
Fanney had been employed with
the T. Eaton Company in her early years.
She was involved with the Ladies Aid at
the Unitarian Church and the C.N.I.B.
She will be fondly remembered for creat-
ing the most beautiful lcelandic sweaters
and the most delicious lcelandic delica-
cies.
She leaves to cherish her memory
her daughter Thora (Roger) Eyvindson
of Ottawa, grandchildren Katrina (Des-
mond) Moser of Salt Lake City, Stephen
(Ailsa) Eyvindson of Deep River, On-
tario, and Sara Eyvindson (Bill Keays) of
Switzerland and six great-grandchildren.
Fanney was predeceased by her hus-
band Ingi in 1943.
A memorial service was held Sun-
day, March 20 at Neil Bardal Inc., 984
Portage Avenue.

Centre for the exceptional care Fanney
received.
