A catalogue ofdoctoral dissertations written by Icelanders 1666—1963 appeared in
theYearbookoftheNational Library 1962-1963. This catalogueis reprinted here in a
revised form and updated to 1980.
A total of408 dissertations are listed. They were submitted to 124 universities in the
following 15 countries: the United States (81), Germany (74), Iceland (53), England
(49), Denmark (45), Sweden (39), Scotland (27), Norway (16), France (9), Canada
(5), Switzerland (4), Austria (2), Belgium (2), Spain (1), Chile (1). The catalogue is
arranged in alphabetical order (according toauthors). Following the bookdescription,
there is the date of the oral examination or the date the degree was awarded, and the
name of the university. The main catalogue is followed by a classified section and a
chronological list.

There is a long history behind the decision to amalgamate the National Library and
the University Library. Part of this history, from 1956, is told here.
A committee appointed by the Minister of Education in 1956 proposed that the
libraries should be amalgamated in a new building to be erected near the University,
and the Althing passed a resolution to that end in 1957.
A committee appointed in 1966 by the Minister of Education to study the future of
research libraries in the country urged that the resolution of the Althing of 1957 be
carried out. There was considerable public interest in the future of the libraries at that
time and discussions in the Althing resulted in the establishment of a building fund in
1967.
On the 150th anniversary of the National Library in 1968, it was announced that the
City of Reykjavík had pledged a piece of land for the new National and University
Library building. At the same time a committee set up by the Althing in 1966 to
prepare celebrations on the occasion of the 1 lOOth anniversary of the settlement of
Iceland in 1974 recommended among other things that such a buildittg be erected to
commemorate this historic occasion. The National Librarian was requested by the
Ministry of Education to start preparations, and in 1969 two foreign advisers visited
Iceland. In the spring of 1970 the Althing passed a resolution to the effect that the new
building should be erected to commemorate the llOOth anniversary in 1974.
On July 15, 1970, a building committee was appointed and various prelintinary
