Caroline (Carrie) Guðrún Humber (nee Christopherson)
2 February, 1915
aroline (Carrie) Guðrún
Humber (nee
Christopherson), bom February
2, 1915, to John Christopherson
and Valgerður (Vala), the fifth
child and first daughter. She
passed away May 11, 2002 after
a brief illness.
Her grandfather (on her
father’s side) was Sigurður,
bom July 9, 1848, at Nesland,
Mývatn, in Iceland and the old-
est of seven children. Her
grandmother, Caroline Taylor,
better known as Carrie, was the
niece of John Taylor, a mis-
sionary with the British Bible
Society. Carrie, predeceased by
11 May, 2002
her seven brothers and sisters,
is survived by her husband
Luke, three generations of
nieces, nephews and cousins,
and many friends.
Carrie attended Elgin
School, now part of Surrey,
when there were eight grades
in one room. In 1925 the fami-
ly moved to Ocean Park; in
1927 to a home on Crescent
Road, White Rock; and in
1928, they moved to
Vancouver where the family
ran the Mayda Pie Shop.
Carrie was one of
Vancouver’s first police-
women, and after attending
uni versity,
taught high
school in
Powell River
and Delta for
many years.
She was proud of
her Icelandic heritage and was
an active member of the
Sólskin Ladies’ Auxiliary. She
enjoyed people, nature, playing
piano and entertaining at
Ytranes, her Ocean Park home.
Carrie was lots of fun, and will
always be remembered for her
kindness, thoughtfulness and
love of family.

Icelanders Searching for Relatives in
North America
My' name is Þuríður
Guðjónsdóttir. I wonder
if it would it be possible to
publish an enquiry or adver-
tisement in your magazine,
Lögberg-Heimskringlal For a
very long time I have been
wondering and speculating
about the fate of my great-
grandmother and her family
in "Vesturheimur" and since I
decided to visit Canada next
July for the first time my
thoughts about her have been
intensifying.
Her name was Ingibjörg
Laurina Jónsdóttir
Norðfjörð, bom 16.01. 1859.
She immigrated to
"Vesturheimur" (Canada or N
Dakota?) probably around
Sigríður Gunnarsdóttir,
born 1955, a librarian at
the Seltjamames Library, is
coming to the United States
and Canada with the tour of
those studying about the
Icelanders who emigrated.
She wishes to find relatives of
Runólfur Sigurðsson, bom
7th June, 1868, died 14th
November, 1929, and who
came to Canada in 1903. He
married Steinunn Jónsdóttir,
bom lst January, 1875, died
18th September, 1904 in
Winnipeg. She wishes to find
out where in Canada the chil-
dren of Jón Runólfsson, bom
1880 and she died there in
1940. Ingibjörg was married
in Iceland, but became a
widow shortly after the birth
of her son (my grandfather,
Rev. Jón Norðfjörð
Jóhannessen, born 16.10.
1878). Her sister and husband
then adopted the two year old
son when Ingibjörg left for
"Vesturheimur." I know that
my grandfather visited her in
the year 1900 and stayed there
(I don't know where) for one
year working in a pharmacy
as a trainee. After that they
must have been correspon-
ding, but I never heard him or
my mother talking about my
great-grandmother or our rel-
atives in "Vesturheimur" and
1898, live. These people are
relatives of her husband,
Helgi Gunnarsson, born in
1952, from Ytri Ásar í Vestur
Skaftafellssýsla.
They have received the
following information from
the Vesturfarasetrið:
Jón Runólfsson
Sigurðsson, son of Runólfur
Sigurðsson, bom 7 October
1898 at Skálafelli in Austur
Skaftafellssýsla. He married
on the llth of March,1929,
Rose Littlewood, who was
bom the lst of June 1910.
Their children were five:
Elsie Margaret, born 21st
the letters are lost.
I am anxious to fínd out
more about my great-grand-
mother and her family in
“Vesturheimur.” I have been
asking relatives here in
Iceland, without result and
my investigations here have
also been without success.
If anyone knows of my
great-grandmother, please
contact me, either by post or
e-mail.
Looking forward to hear-
ing^rom you,
