ical college in Chicago during the
same year.

þPorvaldson was granted a Master of
Arts Degree at Harvard University.

mundur Arnason who had studied

Typographical illusion:
We have sun
too
No, it is not a Chinese proverb but
a typographical illusion which should
read, "We Have Sun Too,” meaning
we also have sun.
Our affluent Icelandic cousins pos-
sess a thriving economy, full employ-
ment, and a standard of living equal
to the best in the western world.
What they do lack are temperatures
and sunshine that will darken their
complexion. For this reason they mi-
grate to the southern climates, nota-
bly the Spanish Island resorts.
It is quite simple, just book a pack-
age deal, all inclusive except for
meals. There are only two worrisome
factors. Enough cash or a favourfble
credit card rating to pay for jHe f^re,
and to be on time when the plane
departs for the south and returns to
the north.
What are the results, a tan from the
upper thighs down to the toes and
from the lower waste to the hair roots
of the head both front and back, all
well done.
News items from Iceland indicate
tourist traffic flow increases to these
southern sun spots of Spain, Portu-
gal and Italy, with the decrease in use
of summer homes, where heavy
sweaters are required to feel comfort-
able in Iceland's Arctic chill.
In Manitoba we have sun too, and
sand beaches. What better place than
lying on the sandy beach at Gimli
and Hecla Island, which serve up a
record-breaking 2400 hours of sun-
shine each year? Depending on
gender, not all can attain front and
back tan on our beaches, our taboos
are more restrictive than that of
Mediterranean countries. This could
be a disadvantage.
How do we redirect the flow of
Icelanders from that of directly south
along migratory bird flyways to veer
southwesterly to our Manitoba
beaches? Probably by package all in-
clusive tours, such as tanning on a
New Iceland beach, visits to Icelan-
dic settlement areas, a tour of Icelan-
dic historical sights, visits wiíh cou-
sins and some JustLplain shopping:
This can all be had by five and a
half hours of flying time as opposed
to four hours to Mediterranean areas.
Another plus could be conversation
in Icelandic served up by Western
Icelanders.
Their birdlike migratory sense of
direction has to be changed to

Imagine the novelty of returning to
Iceland with a Western Icelandic tan,
except for the fair sex who could only
show off a half baked tan, well done
on one side only.
