News
has recently returned to lceland after
taking the remains of a B-17 bomber
plane or "flying fortress" to Portsmouth,
U.S.A. The plane, My Gal Sal, and three
others took off from Goose Bay en route
to England in 1942. The pilots got sepa-
rated in bad weather and did not reach
their destination. My Gal Sal made an
emergency landing on a glacier and was
not recovered until last summer. Flight
enthusiasts from Oregon, USA made
some repairs on the plane and they are
interested in getting it airborne again as
soon as possible. This type of plane is
rare and in great demand. The picture
was taken on board Skógarfoss. There is
hardly any rust to be found on the plane
after 53 years on the glacier.
Sod Houses Rebuilt:
BThe old sod buildings at Þverá m
Laxár-valley are being rebuilt. Last sum-
mer the byre was completed and the
sheep sheds, first built in 1850, were
also being worked on. The sod farm-
house itself, built by Jón Jóakimsson
around the middle of the last century, is
also being rebuilt. These buildings were
all considered to be among the better
buildings from that time. Some time has
passed since Ketill Indriðason, then
farmer at Ytra-Fjall in Aðaldalur, suggest-
ed that all the buildings at Þverá be
rebuilt. Last year the Farmers' Coalition
allotted some money to the project and
many people have taken an interest in
the project with a view to keeping a
complete farm from the last century,
with a11 the buildings, where farming
methods of former times could be dis-
played.
