12 NATO Officials
Visit Keflavik Airport
Twelve top officials of the North Atlantic Treaty Or-
ganziation viewed NATO operations at Keflavik Airport,
Iceland on August 26th. The dignitaries were members of
the NATO Standing Group chaired by Lieutenant General
Jean Piatte of the Franch Army. Following a mid-after-
noon arrival with full honors, Brigadier General Henry G.
Thorne, Jr., briefed the visitors on Iceland Defense Force
operations. The officials then
toured the base, stopping at the
932nd Aircraft Control and Warn-
ing Squadron, the 57th Fighter
Interceptor Alert hangar and
other points of interest.
The dignitaries that night were
guests at a banquet and recep-
tion at the Officers’ Club. Ice-
land’s NATO Commander, General
Thorne and Mrs. Thorne hosted
the event. Other Defense Force
Officials assisted.
The group departed early on
August 27th for Oslo, Norway.
The Standing Group is the exe-
cutive agent for the NATO Mili-

In Practice Alert
Due to heroic action, men of the 57th Fighter Inter-
cepter Squadron were saved from a possible explosion last
Wednesday night, August 20th.

Four Keflavik IVE/Sgt E-7’s
Celebrate More Than LD
Four Keflavik Master Sergeants had more than Labor Day to celebrate this week.
They received their promotions from the grade of E-7 to E-8 in a special promotion
ceremony held at 0900 hours, September 1, in the office of Colonel Richard W. Philbrick,

in the aircraft of Lt. Frank
Reamer. Raw fuel sprayed into
the engines and onto the floor.
An explosion ignited the fuel, set-
ting the craft and the floor un-
der it on fire. Flames came over
the back of the wings.
Another explosion sent flames
over the front of the wings, said
Radio Observer, Lt. Dick Gardner.
Lt. Gardner leaped from the craft
to help Lt. Reamer out. The two,
along with the crews, started
evacuating the hangar.
Another pilot, Lt. William An-
ders, heard the explosions and
raced to a second aircraft, taxi-
ing it clear of the hangar. Lt.
Reamer hurriedly cleared a third
aircraft.

Base Supply Gets
New Crystal Ball
Major Gail L. Bahr, Base Sup-
ply Officer, has announced the
receipt in Base Supply of the new
and latest model crystal ball, type
C-1T-4U. This new model is larger
than the old model and will allow
him to look farther into the fu-
ture. Crystal balls are issued to
all Base Supply officers for gaz-
ing into the future to determine
organizational supply require-
ments for those organizations who
do not submit issue slips. This
equipment is also used to deter-
mine correct stock numbers,
quantities, delivery dates, and

2nd BCT Parades For NCO’s;
Two Receive Special Awards
The 2nd Battalion Combat Team of Keflavik Airport
recently passed in review to honor a group of men long
considered the backbone of any military organization, the
Non Commissioned Officer.
The two highpoints of the parade were the presentation
of a Bronze Star to Staff Ser-^
geant L. D. Smith of Hq. Hq.
and Svc. Co. and the presentation
of the Commander’s Guard Trophy
to Alfa Company.
Sgt. Smith, a Squad Leader in
the Pioneer and Ammunition Sec-
tion of Hq. Co., received the covet-
ed medal for gallent actions dur-
ing World War II.
The Commander’s Guard Trophy
is presented semi-annually to a
unit of the BCT for outstanding
showmanship in military courtesy,
military bearing, and sportsman-
ship. The Trophy was presented
to M/Sgt Leroy P. Honsaker, first
sergeant of Alfa Company by
Major John Mohl, executive of-
ficer of the BCT and Reviewing
Officer for the parade.
The reviewing staff consisted
of the Battalion’s top ranking
NCO’s with First Sergeant Wil-
liam W. Kilgore, sergeant major
of the BCT as Commander of
Troops.

Broadway Comes
To Service Club
The world’s first space visitor
lands on Earth bent on taking
charge of the world. In this in-
truder’s bag of tricks is the power
to broadcast men’s minds so that
their thoughts can be heard, he
doesn’t need food, yet he lives
forever. Will he succeed in his
plot?
It all makes for rolliking laugh-
ter as the recent Broadway smash
hit, “Visit to a Small Planet”
comes to Keflavik Airport Sep-
tember 6, 7, and 8. The play will
be presented by your Keflavik
Theater Guild at the Viking Ser-
vice Club.
This season, a slight admission
fee of 25 cents will be charged
to supplement the production cost
granted by the Base Welfare
Fund.

the first E-8 promotions to be
officially announced west of
Europe.
Only three of the four E-7’s
being promoted were on hand for
the ceremony, two of which had
their families present to witness
the event. Another E-7 was on
leave, therefore he could not at-
tend.
Those promoted were: M/Sgt
Harold S. McKinney, Base Ser-
geant Major; M/Sgt Lynwood W.
Parks, 57th FIS hangar chief;
M/Sgt Clifford A. Baumann, 53rd
ARS line chief; and M/Sgt Harley
S. Yates, 57th FIS line chief.
Sgt. McKinney and Sgt. Bau-
mann had their families present
for the event. Sgt. Yates was on
leave.
Other promoted to the rank of
sergeant, but not present were:
T/Sgt. Gilson E. Smith of the
57th FIS, to M/Sgt. To T/Sgt.
were: Sgt. Steve Chuma, 933rd
AC&W; Sgt. George E. Stillings,
Headquarters IADF; and Sgt.
Kenneth D. Swanson, 1400th In-
stallation Squadron. A/1C Verlin
L. Johnson and A/1C Harold D.
Merriott, both of Hq. IADF were
promoted to Staff.
