Teacher Appreciation Week thanks educators
Story by J02 Jean Ross
The better part of a school-aged child’s
day is spent with a teacher. Someone who
will help to mold, teach and guide that per-
son into adulthood.
The annual National Parent Teacher
Association seeks to honor those teachers
and show them how much their efforts are
appreciated with Teacher
Appreciation Week, May 5 -
12.
“Our teachers here do a lot,”
said A.T. Mahan Elementary
School Parent Teacher
Organization President,
Heather Hinders. “1 am very
impressed with all the great
work they do and we want to
show them how much we
appreciate them.”
According to A.T. Mahan High
School principal, Debra
Johnson, the teacher’s job
doesn’t end when the children

room. They also sponsor extra-curricular
activities so the students can play sports and
belong to clubs. This is a great opportunity
for the community and parents to say thank
you,” said Johnson.
For Teacher Appreciation Week, the ele-
mentary school will host a luncheon for the
teachers on May 7. At the end of the week,
they will distribute ‘teacher survival bags’
containing different items with a special
meaning.
These items include; a puzzle piece to say
“without you things wouldn’t be complete,” a
Lifesaver “for when you have one of those
days,” and a Band-Aid “for when things get
rough.”
Even with these gestures from the parents
and community, Hinders hopes the children
will also take this chance to show their grat-
itude.
“If kids want to do anything nice for their
teachers, this is the week to do it,” said
Hinders.
