This year at Naval Air Station Keflavik, Iceland, volunteers from the 85th Group Maintenance Squadron chipped in their time to help further this program. “This just seemed like a good opportunity to help out,” said Master Sgt. Freddie Love, the chief of the munitions section for the 85th Maintenance Squadron. “It’s a great program and when you stop and think about who really benefits from this it real- ly hits home.” Ken Rogers, the coordinator for the Toys for Tots program here added, “I was very impressed by how good people are. Not only those who volunteered their time to help out, but also those anonymous people who made donations.” Rogers was also impressed by how smoothly the program ran this year. “This was the first year we’ve done anything like this and it all ran smoothly,” said Rogers. “From the assistance we got from the program in the states, to See Tots pg. 15------------------------------- DoDEA Director visits NAS Keflavik Schools By J02 Travis Eisele Dr. Joe Tafoya, Ed.D., the Director of the Department of Defense Education Activities recently visited the A.T. Mahan Elementary and High School to evaluate both of the schools’ educational programs and to get a feel for what the school is like. “I think it’s important that I understand all of the schools. To see their peculiarities and what makes them special,” said Tafoya. “Now when an issue comes up, I’ve been here, I’ve seen it. Tafoya makes it a point to go into every classroom and meet every teacher during his visits. “When I’m going through all of the classrooms, I’m looking for things like today when I went through the elementary school I noticed the kids were very intent- ly involved in reading,” said Tafoya. He also added, “(while I was) at the High School this afternoon I saw some excellent examples of teachers both giving inspiring lectures and also in one of the classes I went to, there was a group of mid- dle school history students talking with depth and knowledge about the American Revolution. I was just really impressed with the answers the kids were giving.” Tafoya was very impressed with the reading programs instituted at the elemen- tary school. “At the elementary school I saw a lot of excellent reading programs,” said Tafoya. “I also met with a group of third grade teachers and they were discussing with me how they were evaluating how well their students can read to find out where there are gaps in some of the students decoding and comprehension skills. I was very impressed with that because it looks like the school is looking toward using our data, and putting our test information to good use.” Tafoya said that in all of the educational See DoDEA, pg. 4 ---------------- atever Takes Federal Express Licensee of Federal Express Corporation: HraSflutningar ehf. • Grjotuhraun 4 • 220 Hafnarfjordur tel: 535 8170 e-mail: fedex@hradi.is webpages: www.hradi.is and www.fedex.com The Hot Dog Shop is the receiving agent at the Base
