The holiday axiom of
fitness goes: Before all
the New Year’s resolu-
tions to exercise, must
come all the Old Year’s
holiday excuses not to.
A legion of fitness
leaders aboard Naval
Air Station Keflavik is
challenging this old
notion and the people
who subscribe to it.
“If you want to
change, there’s no
excuse,” said Lt. Jaye
Bayles, Assistant
Department Head for
the Education and
Wellness Center.
“There are too many
services available and
too many people willing
to help.”
At first glance, a cold,
dark winter in Iceland
may not seem ideal for
pursuing a fitness pro-
gram. But Bayles said
this mentality is just one
excuse among a field of
others and no more a
factor than, ‘I have no
time’, ‘I have no ener-
gy’, or ‘What will I do
with my small chil-
dren?’
“It’s an excuse. You
can find ways around
everything. The number
one excuse is that peo-
ple just don’t feel moti-
vated because it’s dark,”
he said. “My only
answer is that eight
o’clock comes at the
same time every day,
whether there’s light or
whether it’s dark. Some
people go to the extent
of putting lights on
timers, so that when it’s
eight o’clock, their
lights will come on to
help stimulate them. Do
whatever it takes. Just
get up, get out and get
fit.”
Larissa Ruffin, Fitness
Coordinator at the base
gym agrees. “We have
many options to fit
almost anyone’s fitness
program. All of our
facilities and most of
our activities and class-
es are free,” she said.
“For example, we have
classes in step aerobics,
aqua aerobics and an
abs class which are free.
We also have martial
arts and dance classes
that we run regularly for
a small fee. Our facili-
ties include a weight
room, which we will be
upgrading over the next
six months; a swimming
pool, to which we are
currently adding two hot
tubs; racquetball and
basketball courts; a
large cardio room with
an assortment of equip-
ment for an aerobic
workout and 24-hour
running track that
includes selected
weightlifting and cardio
equipment in addition to
the track.”
Like Bayles, Ruffin
says she is ready to
assist anyone faced with
so many choices on nail-
ing down an individual-
ized fitness program
based on specific per-
sonal goals.
“I’m here every day to
help people with their
