Diplomacy is a firm handshake between ambassadors at lavish state
ceremonies. Diplomacy is a firm grip between participants at a local
wrestling exhibition.
A team of Russian wrestlers visited NAS Keflavik yesterday to dem-
onstrate the Russian sport of Sambo; a combat form used by soldiers
and KGB units from the former Soviet Union with origins dating back
to 1923.
The three-man team was brought to NASKEF by the Ambassador
of the Russian Federation, Alexandr Rannikh and was led by David
Rudman, a nine-time Russian Federation Sambo Champion.
“In the very beginning in 1923, Sambo was created for the military and
KGB,” said Rannikh. “For a long time it remained only as a combat regi-
men for special troops. By the end of the 30s, it was made a sport.”
Sambo is an acronym for a Russian phrase that means self defense
without weapons. It’s a composite style of jacket wrestling that today
is practiced two ways; Sport Sambo which is a form of submission grap-
pling and Combat Sambo, a method of self-defense training.
“It is really tough to train for Combat Sambo,” said Rudman, who
earned his mastery of Sambo through 46 years of experience. “So most
people who train in Sambo for combat must train through the sport at
competitions.”
During the demonstration at the gym, a few NASKEF residents had an
opportunity to learn some of the sport’s moves under the watchful eyes of
the team. They wanned up with tumbles and stretching exercises.
