Orioles clog 'Big Red Machine,’ two up in series
The Baltimore Orioles, accus-
tomed to pressure after last
year's loss to the "Miracle Mets,"
have flaunted the oddsmakers and
now own a commanding 2-0 lead in
tne World Series against Cincin-
nati.
The Orioles, who have won a
record 40 games by one run during
the regular season, shaded the
Reds by a single count in the
first two games in Cincinnati's
Riverfront Stadium, 6-5, yester-
day following Saturday's opening
day 4-3 victory.
The "Big Red Machine," as the
Reds have been known all year,
had been considered slight favo-
rites for the first game because
of the home park advantage. But
as the series shifts to Baltimore
for tomorrow's third game, the
Reds face the fact that no team
has ever lost the first two games
at home and then come back to win
the championship.

Stanford, Plunkett bomb Southern Cal;
'Superboy’ hurt in Ole Miss victory
Unlike the first four college
football weekends, there were few
upsets Saturday. But there was a
dandy of a shocker on the West
Coast.
Stanford, knocked from the un-
beaten ranks last week by Purdue,
surprised fourth-rated Southern
California, 24-14. Quarterback
Jim Plunkett, the Indians' candi-
date for the Heisman Trophy, hit
19 of 31 passes for 274 yards and
More NFL upsets as Lions, LA fall;
Oakland punctures Denver’s bubble
Two major upsets highlighted yesterday's NFL action as Washington
dumped Detroit from the list of undefeated teams, and San Francisco
butted Los Angeles, forcing the Rams to move over in the Western
Division's number one slot. ----------------------------
The Redskins' Sonny Jurgen-
son passed for three touchdowns,
paving the way for an easy 31-10
victory over the Lions.
In the second upset, the 49ers
tied up the first place position
in the Western Division of the
tianal Conference by beating the
viously undefeated Rams, 20-6.
The Oakland Raiders got back on
the winning road after beating
the Denver Broncos, 35-23. Daryl
Lamonica threw four touchdown
in
w
passes and set up a fifth score
with a 51-yard pass.
The New York Giants managed
their first victory of the season
by downing the Philadelphia Eagles
in the last 46 seconds of play,

one touchdown—a 50-yard strike
to Bob Moore. Meanwhile, Jackie
Brown scored twice on one-yard
plunges and Stanford's defense
stopped the Trojans twice inside
the five-yard line.
Itwas Stanford's first victory
over Southern Cal in 12 years and
ended the Trojans' 25-game unbeat-
en streak in regular season play.
Southern Cal was the only one
of the top ten ranked teams to
lose, but Mississippi and Texas
scored costly victories.
Second-ranked Texas crunched
arch rival Oklahoma, 41-9, but
the Longhorns lost pass catching
star Cotton Speyrer for the rest
of the season with a broken left
arm.
It was the 24th straight victo-
ry for Texas-longest winning
streak in the nation.
Oklahoma had abandoned its pro-
style offense for Texas' "Wishbone
T". The Longhorns' defense was
stunned early in the game by the
maneuver, when the Sooners took
