THE WHITE FALCON] Volume XXX, Number 26 _July 5, 1974 L ■\ ADM Holloway relieves ADM Zumwalt as CNO Admiral James L. Holloway III relieved Admiral Elmo R. Zumwalt as Chief of Naval Operations in a ceremony held Saturday at the U.S. Naval Acadeny, Annapolis, Maryland. Admiral Holloway became the 20th CNO upon relieving ADM Zumwalt, and also the Navy's first nuclear-trained CNO, having commanded the Navy's first nu- clear-powered Carrier, USS Enter- prise. He has been serving as Vice Chief of Naval Operations since September 1973. Admiral Zumwalt, the youngest man ever to hold the post, re- tired Monday after 32 years of active service. During his four years as CNO, ADM Zumwalt instituted many "Peo- ple Programs" designed to upgrade the quality of life in the Navy. He also emphasized the need for a modernized fleet as an integral part of the nation's defenses, and initiated numerous programs aimed at achieving that moderni- zation . Navy Judge Advocate General Rear Admiral Merlin H. Staring administered the Oath of Office to ADM Holloway. The principal speaker at the ceremony was Vice President Gerald R. Ford. Other dignitar- ies present included the Secre- tary of Defense James R. Schle- singer, Secretary of the Navy J. William Middendorf II and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Thomas H. Moorer. ADM Elmo R. Zumwalt NRS head to visit Exchange, Commissary \ Rear Admiral Joe G. Schoggen, SC, USN, Commanding Officer of the Navy Resale System Office, will be visiting the Navy Ex- change and Commissary Store here Tuesday and Wednesday. During his visit, the Admiral will discuss resale operations with the local commanders here. As Deputy Commander of the Naval Supply Systems Command for resale matters, Admiral Schoggen is responsible for providing technical support, management assistance and administrative guidance to all Navy commands concerning resale activities. He also has direct command of all Navy commissary stores. Currently, the Navy Resale System consists of 166 Navy Ex- changes, 95 commissary stores and 376 ships stores afloat. The primary objective of these activities is to improve the quality of life for Navy person- nel by offering quality merchan- dise, services and food products at reasonable prices. Exchanges and ships stores hsv© a. secondary mission of gsn— erating funds for Navy recrea- tion. Last year, these resale activities contributed more than $44 million in support of local and Navywide recreation programs.
