Keep up the good work
By Capt. W. Robert Blake Jr.
NAS Commanding Officer
I want to thank everyone who participated in the basewide
clean-up. The base looks great. I was absolutely amazed at the
amount of junk that collects throughout the winter.
Most people seem to appreciate the clean surroundings and
don’t mind the effort it takes to keep the base clean. The work is
not overwhelming as long as everyone takes some responsibility
for keeping litter picked up and not intentionally trashing the
surroundings. I do not want to get into a situation where the
“messy” element of our community continues to litter and
another group cleans up after them. Unfortunately, trash will
occasionally blow from people’s cars, dumpsters, out of back-
packs of children and from the grasp of everyone. What can be
avoided is intentionally throwing litter out of car windows or
onto the ground. Please throw your trash into a proper recepta-
cle. I would appreciate the cooperation of smokers to put their
cigarette butts somewhere else other than the ground outside the
ibuildings they are about to enter. Nobody likes picking them up,
Kind they don’t go away with time.
To keep the base as clean as it currently is, I am asking each
organization to continue to maintain their areas throughout the
summer.
On base clean-up day, I saw quite a few organizations cleaning
up their assigned areas. The support was excellent and anyone
could see a tremendous improvement. In the late afternoon, I
saw some residents out in the housing and barracks areas and I
really appreciate their efforts. I am looking to the senior resi-
dents to organize the efforts of the occupants. There are very
few people who should be exempt from helping out. Don’t just
think that someone else will take care of it - get everyone to
jump in and participate. There is nothing more powerful than a
team working together to help out in a given situation. I see the
difference volunteers make in this community, and I am continu-
ally impressed. The bottom line is that keeping our environment
clean is an all-hands effort and I expect everyone to do their fair
share.
Thank you for all the cooperation and hard work. Hopefully,
we’ll start seeing some green coming out soon.
