Hin mikla tóbaks brúkun, sem
nú ríkir í heiminum meðal yngri
kynslóða er eitt af þvá sem þarf
að íhuga og útrýma með krafti
kærleikans. Nú vita allir að of
mikil tóbaks brúkun skemmir
meltnigarfæri mannsins og lam-
ar hugsanakraftinn. — Jafnvel
læknarnir bera áhyggju út af
þessu og segjast vona að siðferð-
isþrek fólksins taki í sig nýjan
kjark og yfirvinni þennan falska
unað, því heilsufarið sé í hættu
nema þessari reykjarsvælu létti
af.
Nú er það í sjálfsvaldi hvers
manns að vakna og þekkja rétt
frá röngu og gera alt ssm í þeirra
valdi stendur til að vera sannir
menn og konur með hreinan lík-
ama og hreina sál, sem hafnar
þessum holdlegu girndum, svo
sem tóbaksbrúkun, ofdrykkju og
ofáti, afsegja að þjóna þessum
löstum lengur.
Alt er hægt að yfirbuga með
krafti kærleikans, en fýlla hjart-
að með réttvísi, guðrækni, trú-
mensku bindindi. Þá mun líka
afleggjast ágirnd og stærilæti. —
Við þessa betran hugarfarsins
myndast svo hin nýja veröld sem
allir vonast eftir, þar sem friður
og bróðurelskan ræður. En með-
an ilt og gott er í hringiðu í
hjörtum manna getur engin
breyting orðið á ytra ástandi
mannlífsins. Allar þær hörm-
ungar og sár sem stríðið hefir
valdið ætti að vera nóg til að
bræða harðlyndið og gráta með
grátendum og sýna þeim samúð
og meðlíðan, bindast kærleiks-
böndum við alla menn.
Mér kemur í hug vísa úr göml-
um rímum eftir Sigurð Breið-
íjörð. Vísan er þessi:
Harma klæðin höfuð byrgja,
heyrast kvæði sorgar þrenn.
Feður og mæður syni syrgja,
systur bræður, konur menn.
Já, mörg sonar lífæð hefir
hætt að slá og sorg móður hjart-
ans ólæknandi nema með líf-
steini trúarinnar, sem á er skrif-
að: "Sonur þinn lifir." Þessa
vissu von gefur drottinn þeim
sem syrgja.
Samt höfum við sem þjóð lifað
í friði og nægtum, þar sem aðrar
þjóðir hafa verið dændar eignum
og mannréttindum of an á mann-
fallið. Þörfin fyrir hjálp er mik-
il. Tökum nú peningana sem
menn brúka fyrir hinn áður
nefnda óþarfa sem skemmir
mannlífið og þessum miljónum
væri svo dreift yfir heiminn til
að seðja og klæða nakin og
hungruð börn í hinum sundur-
tættu löndum, og fyrir skýli
handa gamalmennum, vonlaus-
um af hallæri og kvölum hörm-
unganna. Þetta mundi breiða
margfalda blessun yfir þjóðina,
að elska þannig náungann eins
og sjálfa oss.
Sumum f inst að þessi styrjald-
ar veröld vera svo langt í burtu,
en hugsum oss nú um, gætum
við fengið af okkur að lifa í óhófi
og svalli ef við vissum af næsta
nágranna okkar hungruðum og
alsþurfandi. Það er óhugsandi
að við gerðum það. I hjarta
mannvinarins, en_ allir næstu
nágrannar, eins þeir sem búa á
f jærstu ströndum heimsins. Því
ber þjóðinni að gera sjálfsaf-
neitun sína hinn kristilega mann-
kærleika, sem fer að dæmi hins
miskunsama samaríta, sem tek-
ur að sér sárum slegin ókendan
mann sem ræningjar höfðu skað-
að. Tekur hann í heimkynni,
græðir sár hans og borgar kostn-
aðinn.
Hin nýja og betri veröld kem-
ur ekki af sjálfu sér heldur fyrir
betran þjóðanna. Nýja vaknnig
frá draumi heimslegra listinga
inn í friðarheim vakandi sam-
vizku, sem er guðs rödd í mann-
