in legal firm as well as consular duties
J. Ragnar Johnson, Q.C., Icelandic Consul in Toronto, being
presented with the medallion of the Grand Cross Knight of the Order
of the Falcon by Bjarni Benediktsson.
J. Ragnar Johnson was born in
Winnipeg, Manitoba, May 7th,
1902. His father was Finnur
Johnson from Milar in Hrutafirdi
and his mother Gudrun Asgeirsdot-
tir from Lumdum in Borgarfirdi.
Unlike most settlers, who came in
groups, his mother came by herself
to visit a cousin in Winnipeg,
intending to return to Iceland.
However, she was offered a job as
assistant to a women's wear tailor.
After a year, her friend Finnur came
to Winnipeg to see what was delay-
ing her return. He too found im-
mediate employment and decided to
stay in Canada. They were married
shortly thereafter.
Gudrun's work did not interfere
with their family life, as she bore
'and raised three children. The fami-
ly was saddened with the loss of the
elder son, Asgeir, who died on ac-
tive duty in World War I. Daughter
Anna married John Duncan and
moved near Sinclair, Manitoba. The
younger son Ragnar graduated
Magna Cum Lauda from the Univer-
sity of Manitoba in the mid twen-
ties. He received his LLB from the
Manitoba Law School and was ad-
mitted to the bar in 1927. He con-
tinued his studies and was given an
LLM from Harvard Law School.
In 1933 he married Marion Sellers
of Winnipeg and when they moved
to Toronto in 1935 he took a position
as Manager of a Trust Company.
Shortly thereafter he was admitted
to the Ontario Bar and has been in
law practise ever since.
In November 1947 Ragnar was ap-
pointed Icelandic Consul. At that
time the Certificate required the
signatures of both the reigning
Monarch and the Canadian
Secretary of State. His appointment
therefore bears the signatures of
King George VI and the Hon. Louis
St. Laurent.
One of his hobbies is cultivating
roses, thus his garden provides a
beautiful setting for their annual
hosting of the. Consular Corps,
always held on the 17th of June. At
these garden parties one meets Con-
suls and Ambassadors of many
Countries as well as regional
dignitaries and this event is looked
forward to . with anticipation.
Marion is a gracious and charming
hostess. Her warm personality has
been a great social and business
asset over the years.
Several years agof their son Jon
Ragnar, who is a Barrister and
Solicitor in Toronto was appointed
Icelandic Vice-Consul. He and his
wife Pat have two fine sons. Marion
and Ragnar enjoy taking their
grandsons to church with them on
Sundays.
On September 6th, 1976, the Pro-
vincial Government recognized that
J. Ragnar Johnson had been practis-
ing law for fity years by presenting
him with a document signed by
Premier William Davis.
After he became Consul the
Icelandic Government presented
him with the Order of the Falcon.
Subsequently he was made a Grand
Cross Knight of tfie Order of the
Falcon, which was conferred on him
in Iceland by Bjarni Benediktsson.
