Bókasafnið

						sjúkrahúsa við bókasafnið þar sem hægt er að leita í geisla-

diskum safnsins allan sólarhringinn. Þetta er í sjónmáli

hér á landi og verður vonandi að veruleika á þessu ári. Á

Bókasafni Landspítalans nettengjast fimm tölvur geisla-

diskum á safninu en verið er að gera tilraun með netteng-

ingu við Bókasafn Geðdeildar. Ef það gengur vel munu

aðrar deildir tengjast safninu á sama hátt.

Þetta eru sannarlega spennandi tímar hvað varðar upp-

lýsingaöflun og það er góð tilfinning að geta veitt notend-

um sífellt betri þjónustu og sjá að safnkosturinn nýtist æ

betur. Betri nýting á safnkostinum á læknisfræðibóka-

safni þýðir betra upplýsingastreymi og um leið betri heil-

brigðisþjónustu.

SUMMARY

Information retrieval in the health sciences

The article describes the short history of the availability of comput-

erized medical information services in Iceland. After an introduction

to the development of automated retrieval of medical information in

the National Library of Medicine the currently available MeDLINE

and MIC (Medicinska Informations Centralen) database services are

presented in a tabulated form. Emphasis is laid on Nordic cooper-

ation since Iceland has started its accessing through MIC in the

seventies and continues to rely on the Nordic countries for supple-

mentary services, such as quick document delivery through electron-

ic ordering systems. Most recent advances like CD-ROM technology

have further extended the range of retrieval both within subject areas

and for individual institutions. Iceland, just as other countries, has

started programmes to educate both librarians and endusers in search

techniques related to information retrieval from health sciences data-

bases.
