Flestir stærstu útgefendur landsins eru aðilar að Al-

þjóðlega bóknúmerakerfinu. Sama þróun á sér stað hér og

annars staðar, að áhugi bókaútgefenda og bóksala hefur

vaknað á vélvirku sölu- og birgðabókhaldi. I framtíðinni

er líklegt að aukin vélvæðing á íslenska bókamarkaðinum

muni leiða til þess að Alþjóðlega bóknúmerakerfið nái

meiri útbreiðslu hér á landi.

SUMMARY

ISBN - the international book numbering

system

An analysis of ISBN on the levels of composition, application and

system management is presented. The author briefly traces the

history of the idea which has led to the establishment of the In-

ternational ISBN Agency. The composition and use of single num-

bers are analyzed and demonstrated with examples. Management of

ISBN is conducted through the three-tier system of international,

area and publisher responsibility, each with its well defined roles and

tasks. The article also describes the events which led to the establish-

ment of the Icelandic National ISBN Office, its current number

distribution scheme and future plans for automated control proce-

dures.
