Abstract Educating an important profession The origin of library and information science at the University of Iceland can be traced back to the year 1956. It has, therefore, been taught at the University for almost half a century. A new chapter in the history of the department of Library and Information Science began when a formal Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) programme was launched in 2004. Methods in library and information science have changed drastically in conjunction with the rapid development in information technology. These changes are reflected in the courses being offered. More emphasis is now placed on ties with the outside world, people in the profession and with industry. An attempt is now being made to meet the demands for knowledge and skills in industry, but without reducing academic requirements. The aim of the department is to graduate qualified students that are able to take on demanding jobs in their profession, in industry as well as in research and teaching. In the pursuit of this goal the department offers courses that cover all the necessary aspects of the profession and related disciplines. Library and information specialists work today in various fields. They work in libraries, of course, but also as records managers, web managers, quality management and knowledge management officers, and the list goes on. They have also founded consulting firms and consulted organisations on records and information management. In the beginning of 2005 atotal of 428 students had graduated as library and information specialists from the University of Iceland. A report measuring the quality of the Library and Information Science Department at the University of Iceland was made ten years ago. One of its most important conclusions was the recommendation to hire additional staff to the department.
