Abstract 5th Anniversary of Upplýsing Upplýsing - The Icelandic Library and Information Science Association (Upplýsing - Félag bókasafns og upplýsingafræða, www.upplysing.is) was founded on the lst of January 2000 by the merger of four Icelandic library associations. It serves as professional association in the field of library and information science and as a leading force in the professional debate, aiming at increased understanding of the role of Icelandic libraries and information centers for culture, education and science and enhance cooperation. Members are now around 500, individuals and institutions as well. The association publishes Bókasafnið (www. bokasafnid.is), a professional magazine on library and information science and issues the newsletter Fregnir, for more general information. Furthermore history of the Icelandic library associations was published in 2004 under the title: A leið til upplýsingar. Saga Bókavarðafélags Islands, aðildarfélaga þess og Félags bókasafnsfræðinga. Upplýsing has (in cooperation with others) developed a new branch of study for library technicians in secondary schools. Upplýsing, and its members take part in various comittees and activities abroad and at home as well, i.e. EBLIDA, IFLA, NVBF, IASL, Nord I&D. Upplýsing has organised international conferences as a result of cooperation. Upplýsing also offers its members various lectures, library visits and courses to broaden the education of its members. Abstract Usability Study of University Web Sites in Iceland The web is an extremely flexible medium for publ- ishing information and today all major educational institutions have large web sites. Unfortunately many of those web sites are created without real regard for users and their tasks. In turn their usabi- lity varies greatly and task support is limited, as the results of this study show. In the Spring of 2004 a usability study was per- formed on four different university web sites in Iceland using a combination of three methods of study: observation, think-aloud protocol anal- ysis and questionnaires. The web sites of the four largest universities in Iceland were chos- en for the test: University of Iceland, Reykjavík University, Iceland University of Education and University of Akureyri. The aim of the study was to study the web sites' usability by gathering information about how the web sites support- ed some common tasks of their potential users. Observational studies were performed and post- task questionnaire was created to measure three key aspects of usability: users' perceptions of sat- isfaction, efficiency and effectiveness. A post-test questionnaire was created to gather more specific information about the users' opinion about the individual web sites. The aim was also to develop a simple set of guidelines for best practice and set up a standardised usability test that could be app- lied to most web sites. It has proved useful to test a taxonomy of web sites in parallel with developing such a test, as their different designs and navigat- ion methods make different contributions to the best practice guidelines for usability.
