Abstract Innovations mean new opportunities Jóhanna Gunnlaugsdóttir defended her doctoral disserta- tion at the University of Tampere in Finland on November 25, 2006. She became then the first Icelander to finish such a degree in records and information management. In the interview Jóhanna discusses her studies, what inspired her to undertake this challenge and her diverse career experience. Her dissertation carries the title: "The Implementation and Use of ERMS: A Study in Icelandic Organizations". The aim of the research was to discover why organiza- tions invested in electronic records management systems (ERMS), how ERMS were being implemented and to find out whether and how employees were actually using ERMS. The research aimed to discover the relationship between the implementation methods and the use of ERMS. The study discovered that there was a strong rela- tionship between the most important input factors and the outcomes that they influenced. There were mainly three implementation factors that appeared to be most impor- tant for the success of the implementation. These were (1) support by top management, (2) the participation of the users in the project, and (3) the training of the users who should receive both basic training in records management and training in the use of the system. Other findings of the research revealed (1) how employees in fact used the ERMS, and (2) how the employees actually felt working in the system. Jóhanna was born in 1949. She finished her matricu- lation examination in 1970. She completed a BA degree in library science and history in 1985, and a year later, she, along with a few other librarians, founded the firm Gangskör sf. that provides consulting and service in the field of records and information management. Jóhanna and her closest colleague worked full time in the firm for twenty years and organized records and library material in over 100 organizations in Iceland during that period. Jóhanna also worked as a librarian at Gardabær Municipal and School Library 1984-1986 and trained students in the use of the library. Jóhanna's interest in records management prompted her to obtain an MSc Econ degree from the University of Wales, Aberystwyth in 1998, but she had started to teach courses in records management at the University of Iceland in the year before. Jóhanna has since 1997 devoted her time to research and teaching. She wants to strengthen the field of records and information management in Iceland and to offer doctoral studies at the University of Iceland in co- operation with universities abroad.
