						Abstract

Records management in government agenies

The study examined the status of records management in

twelve government agencies in Iceland by using qualitative

methododology. It was a multiple-case study based on

in-depth interviews with the employees responsible for

records within these agencies. Furthermore, the study

seeked to consider the legal role of the National Archives

to inspect the archives of officials and institutions and to

provid them with guidelines on records management.

The findings were twofolded. Firstly, there were strong

implications that government agencies can be divided in

three group by the stage of records management imple-

mentation, ranking from being without records manage-

ment to successfui implementation. The key factor of the

implementatíon was the support of the seníor leadership.

Secondly, the National Archives has not been able to

complete its obligations required by the law mainly due to

lack of capital but also lack of expertise in records manage-

ment since the archives professional concerns have been on

historical records rather than active ones.
