Abstract Development of libraries in eastern Iceland Since the year 2000 there have been great changes in the development of housing of the public and school libraries in eastern Iceland. Previously the library buildings were small and inconvenient, but now many of the libraries have been moved into new locations, and in most cases it ís due to the constructing of new schools. Putting together public and school libraries has proved to be successful, so that has become the most common model of libraries in eastern Iceland. After 2007 only three libraries will remain as public libraries, i.e. the public libraries of Seyðisfjörður, Fáskrúðsfjörður and Egilsstaðir. Examples of libraries are those of Vopnafjörður, Eskifjörður, Neskaupstaður, Stöðvarfjörður and Reyðarfjörður and soon there will be a new library building at Fáskrúðsfjörður. The range in size of the libraries varies, as they can be from 120 m 2 to over 260 m2. What they do have in common, hovever, is offering an easy access for students as well as employees and the public, as most of the libraries are situated on the ground floor of the buildings.
