enda telur hann þær jafngamlar. Nú hefur það verið sannað,

eins og fyrr var getið, að skozka basaltflóran sé eósen. Eru því

allar líkur til þess, að íslenzka surtarbrandsflóran sé líka eósen,

en ekkert mælir á móti.

Eins og nú er komið vitneskju um basaltið í grannlöndum

okkar, liggur beinast við og eðlilegast að ætla, að elztu basalt-

myndanir íslands — ef til vill allt tertíera basaltið — sé eósent

að aldri.
