um gluggann út eg leit,

er blasti við sveit,
með sólskinsblett í miðhlíð
þó myrk væri nátt
merluð glöðu skini
sem skar af við blátt.
í bernsku minni og æsku
sú burst mitt auga dró,
bletturinn í miðhlíð
við hvörmum mínum hló.
Er skýjaður var himinn
og sólina ekki sá,
sólskin var þar jafnán
og umgerðin blá.
t skriðu hafði Grettir
þar skyrtu sína breitt,
skreið af henni vargur
því veðrið var heitt.
En skriðan ber þess merki
sem skilið eftir var,
þó skyrtan sé nú horfin
er Grettir sterki bar.

geislar leika um nöfnin
og stafa frá hlíð.

Monthly Bulletin of the
Department of Exlernal
Affairs, Canada, October 1960:
Earlier this year it was
agreed to raise the status of
Canadian and Icelandic diplo-
matic representation to the
ambassador level. On Monday,
June 20, in Ottawa, His Ex-
cellency Thor Thors presented
to the Governor General his
letters of credence as Ambas-
sador Extraordinary and Plen-
ipotentiary of Iceland to Can-
ada and on Monday, July 4,
in Reykjavik, His Excellency
Ambassador Thor Thors
R. A. MacKay presented his
credentials as Canadian Am-
bassador to Iceland. It is fit-
ting, on the occasion of this
further demonstration of the
good relations existing be-
tween the two countries, to
review briefly the history of
Canadian - Icelandic relations
during the past 90 years.
Norse Discoverers
of Canada
Of course, to be quite cor-
rect, this history is much
longer. It is almost certain
that Canada was discovered
by an Icelander, Leif Eriks-
son, in the year 1000, just after
the Icelanders had colonized
Greenland. Others appear to
have followed him. Indian
hostility precluded settlement
in Markland (perhaps New-
foundland or Nova Scotia)
and Vinland (perhaps Nova
Scotia or Cape Cod), but tim-
ber continued to be fetched
from the shores of the New
World for the Greenland col-
onies, until their sudden de-
cline in the fourteenth cen-
tury. Where originally did
these hardy seafarers come
from?
Iceland is an island con-
sisting of some 40,000 square
miles of volcanic mountains,
glaciers and hot springs,
which lies just below the Ar-
tic Circle in the same latitude
as Nome (Alaska) and south-
ern Baffin Island. However,
it is warmed by the Gulf
Stream and therefore enjoys
a damp and relatively warm
climate. During this century
it has apparently once again
become warmer, as it was in
870 A.D., when it was first
settled by Norsemen from
Norway and, adding a Celtic
admixture, from northern
Great Britain. At that time
the island was sparsely for-
ested, but today it is almost
devoid of trees.
History of Iceland
From Iceland colonies were
later established in Green-
land. A parliament, the Al-
thingi, which is the world’s
oldest known democratic as-
sembly of its type, was first
held in 930 A.D., and in 1262
the country linked itself by
treaty with the king of Nor-
way. When in 1387 all the
Scandinavian countries were
united under the Danish king,
Iceland also accepted his rule.
It remained in a personal
union with Denmark until
1944.
In the intervening centuries,
however, the island fell upon
difficult times. The popula-
tion, which is estimated to
have been between 70,000 and
80,000 at the end of the elev-
enth century, was greatly re-
duced by various natural dis-
asters such as the Black
Death, which betweeri 1402
and 1404 took the lives of two
out of every three inhabitants.
At the beginning of the eight-
eenth century, there were
50,000 inhabitants but hard-
ship and famine, in part due
to the unfavourable climatic
cycle through which North-
ern Europe was then passing,
further reduced their num-
bers. The population increased
once again during the nine-
teenth century and by 1870
some of the younger men of
the island were prepared to
venture abroad in search of a
better living.
First Icelandic
Selilers in Canada
The first four emigrants
from the island came to the
Province of Quebec in that
year en route to Wisconsin,
where they settled. In 1872
Captain Slgtryggur Jonasson,
who eventually became a
member of the Manitoba leg-
islature, followed them, but,
instead of going on to Wis-
consin, spent the winter in

St. Stephen's Church
verður opnuð um jólin
St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church í St. James, þar sem
séra Eric H. Sigmar er þjónandi prestur, verður opnuð innan
skamms.
Allir eru velkomnir.
