First Lutheran Church in Winnipeg commemorates
the International Year of the Handicapped
The People of the First Lutheran
Church have voted to construct an
elevator at the church in order to
provide better access for disabled
members of the congregation and to
commemorate the International
Year of the Handicapped. At a
general meeting held on Thursday,
June 25, 1981, the congregation
voted overwhelmingly in support of
the proposal which would see the
elevator constructed at a location
near the east junction of the church
property and the parish hail. 'l'he
cost of the project has been
estimated at $35,000.00.
"The Church Council believes
that it is imperative that access be
provided for all members of the con-
gregation," said a church
spokesman in a recent interview.
"We have a number of members
who have been unable to worship
with us on a regular basis due to
physical handicaps. The elevator
will not only be of assistance to
those of our members and visitors
confined to wheel chairs but also to
those who are disabled either by
heart disease, arthritis or some
other disabling condition.”
The elevator will provide access
not just to the.church but to the
parish hall, lower auditorium and
Sunday School area. In all, four
levels of the church will be served
by the elevator.
When asked about funding of the
project, the spokesman indicated
that the church council hoped that
the project would be financed
through special offerings by
members of the church and friends
of the congregation. He indicated
that donations could be forwarded

Nú útskrifa flestir skólar stú-

Síðustu stúdentarnir á þessu vori
