Growing up on Lake Winnipeg
Continued from page 4
comes, boy, you have to watch out
for that one. Cause them three
sisters, boy, they are the ones you
have to watch out for if you are out
in a storm. When you see one com-
ing, you can be travelling, you can
be travelling on the lake and you
can go your direction — wherever
you're going — and when you see
them three coming you turn into
them. Yöu know you turn your boat
into the three sisters while they're
passing, and then they're gone and
then another three come later on.
A. Do you know sort of how often
they come — how many waves
there are in between the three
sisters?
H. No, I've never taken any
notice of that.
A. But you keep your eye out for
them.
H. Well, you have to watch them
because they can swamp your boat.
They are twice as, three times, four
times as big as the other ones.
A. Angnes, Mabel and Becky!
Where did the names come from or
did everybody call them that?
H. I don't know — I don't think
they came from Iceland. They must
have come from some other coun-
try. Agnes, Mabel and Becky. But
that's what they called them all the
time.

Death on the Lake
A. Did any of the guys you knew
ever drown fishing on the lake?
H. Oh yeah, quite a few drowned.
I don't really know how many. Ben-
ny Solmundson, and then in the
olden days — my uncle drowned out
here — two guys with him, on a
skiff, about three miles out. Then
there's more guys than that. Oh
yeah, that was out at Humbug Bay.
Oh yeah, Steve Arnason was going
out one time and they were towing
behind the Goldfield. There was
this Jonas Einarson, he was sitting
on the empty gas pump at the back,
you know, and they were towing
behind the Goldfield — pulling
them out to go white fishing — you
must remember Jonas — and he fell
off the — a stupid kid you know, he
was just a young kid — he might
have been sixteen, seventeen, eigh-
teen or something — and he was sit-
ting on the drum, an empty drum,
and the drum rolled over, the boat
was rolling a little bit, and he fell
off. Steve yelled — well it was in the
dark, in the night — and Steve yell-
ed till he couldn't yell anymore.
Yelled to stop, but nobody stopped.
I don’t know how long it was until
he could give them a signal to stop.
It was too late anyway.
A. What about Benny Solmund-
son?
H. Yeah, Benny Solmundson
Well, he was going to Tamarac.
Nobody knows what happened, but
he must have just fallen out of his
boat and his boat kept on going. He
had an outboard. Was going north
for winter fishing. One time we
were at — fishing at Albert's Point.
There was me and dad together —
we were fishing together — and
Paul. Old Paul had a young Ukrai-
nian kid fishing for him — working
for him — and Alma, Paul's
daughter, was cooking. She was
cooking for us. So we went out this
morning to set. It was in the winter
— first ice — the ice was just mak-
ing. We went out to set, and Paul
was on the north side of us, north-
east side of us, and we were done
setting about four nets, and I pulled
Inga Olson.
the nets under. I was pulling the
nets away — this way like. When I
was pulling under I seen a little
crack in the ice, oh, about four in-
ches, so I kept on pulling and I step-
ped over the crack and I kept on
pulling, and when I was walking
back towards dad where he was set-
ting, and I crossed the crack, it was
about a foot wide. And then I came
up to him and I said, I told him
about that crack, I told him it was
getting wider. And by the time we
came from where he was to the
crack, we couldn't even jump over
it. It was that wide. And Paul was on
the other side of it, but we were
lucky. We were on the shore side of
the crack. By the time we left it was
about ten feet wide, the crack. So
we jumped on the dogs and we went
home and got a boat — dug a boat
out of the — way up in the bank. It
took two of us — skiff, great big
skiff, half full of ice, that we used
for the fall fishing, and we had to go
and get that skiff and find the oars
and oarlocks, and everything you
know. We didn't expect anything
like this, and then by the time we
got out to Paul the crack was a mile
and a half wide — when we got out.
Suppose we'd have been on the
other side of the crack the way he
was, and Alma was all alone at
home — she could never have got a
skiff out there. There was nobody
else around there at all, not a per-
son, not a soul anyplace around. So
that was a lucky day for us. We got
him off the lake that time.
