ICELANDIC LESSONS
Thirteen hardy souls under the
tutelage of Dr. Christopher Hale have
been immersed since February lst in
the intricacies of the pronounciation
and grammar of the Icelandic lang-
uage. Using materials developed in
Manitoba, the group has blossomed
in its understanding of this complex
language, and at the same time has
discovered that the road to profi-
ciency is a long one. The class, which
is a mix of all ages and both sexes,
meets weekly on Mondays from 5:00
— 7:00 at the University of Alberta,
and plans to continue meeting
through to the end of June. If any of
you out there are interested in join-
ing us, please call Lillian MacPherson
at 422-7557, work: 432-5560.
MARKERVILLE PICNIC

15th. There will be the traditional ac-
tivities as well as games for the kids
and a dance on Saturday night. There
will be camping spots available on
Friday and Saturday night at the site.
Let's make this year's picnic one of
the best ever. See you there!
RADIO BROADCASTS

Icelandic spoken in Edmonton every

Icelandic songs in this time slot dai-
ly, and Allison King announces the
songs in Icelandic. She also an-
noimces special events. Let her know
if something is happening which she
could announce. Her phone number

THORABLOTT, 1986
Early February was the time for
Edmonton's Thorablott, the Chateau
Lacombe was the place. Once again
the guests were treated to a sump-
tuous feast, beautifully prepared and
presented by the hotel's staff. Allison
King was the evening's Master of
Ceremonies, Bill Peterson toasted
Thor, and Chris McNaughton escort-
ed the fjallkona, Ragnheidur Gun-
narsson into the ballroom.
This year's fjallkona is from
Calgary. In addition to appearing in
her beautiful costume, she addressed
the gathering after the meal. High-
lights of the evening was the voice of
Baldvin Juliusson, singer of Icelandic
songs, who sang twice during the
evening. He was accompanied by
Thelma Grant. Both singer and
pianist came from Regina for the af-
fair. Baldvin's wife Margret was also
there. Dancing was to the Echoes.
Thanks to all those who organized
the affair, in particular Brian Svein-
bjornson; and to those who prepared
foods like rullapylsa, vinartorta,
Kleinur. It was a gastronomic delight,
and an all around fun evening.

PHONE COMMITTEE
One of the best methods of gather-
ing information to a large group of
people is to phone each person in-
dividually. The Icelandic Society has
been doing this successfully for a
long time now. The success is due to
the continuing efforts, dedication and
time put in by the committee mem-
bers: Elsie Melax, Brinky Gud-
mundson, Lucile Oddson, Jonina
Eaman, Linda Ross, Helen Halldor-
son, Helga Rennie, Nina Campbell
and Chris MacNaughton. Thank you
gang for all your efforts.

ICELANDIC NATIONAL
LEAGUE
Its annual meeting was in Van-
couver on April 4, 5, and 6 this year,
the first time ever out of Winnipeg.
Gunnar Thorvaldson was the dele-
gate from the Edmonton Society, and
presented a report on the club's ac-
tivities. He returned with genea-
logical forms which he will turn over
to the executive and advises that the
League pledged $50,000 over 16
years to HIP, Heritage Image Pride,
the fund raiser for the Icelandic
Choir at the University of Manitoba.

ALBERTA CULTURAL
HERITAGE COUNCIL
This council, which is funded by
the Albeta government, includes re-
presentatives from 68 countries. It is
intended to foster tplerance and
understanding between different
groups, and to provide a network to
assist New Canadians to integrate in-
to Canadian society. Allison King
represents the people of Icelandic
origin for the Edmonton region. In
this role she coordinates activities
between the Council and the Edmon-
ton Icelandic Society, such as the
Saga Singers' participation in the
Pope's visit and the lOth anniversary
celebration of the founding of the
Council when the choir sang before
the Premier, the Mayor and the Chief
of Police at the Edmonton Conven-
tion Centre. Allison is called upon to
model her Icelandic costume, and re-
öently she and June Parker spent a
half day at Edith Cavell School in Mill
Woods displaying the costume,
showing films and telling about
Iceland.
IN SYMPATHY
The society sends our sympathy to
Regina Johannson of Markerville in
the loss of her son, John.
SOCIETY LIBRARY
The Icelandic Society has a small
library of Books which can be bor-
rowed. These are mostly translation
(in English) of the Sagas. There are
some books written in Icelandic as
well. The library is always eager for
donations of books as well. Mr. A1
Arnason is taking care of the library
since the closure of the Scandinavian
centre a few years ago. He reports
that there hasn't been any interest in
the library for three years now. So if
you want to read some of the books,
please contact A1 Arnason at
455-7946 to make an appointment.
