Classical concerts in
Winnipeg and Calgary
Two young Icelandic musicians,
pianist Hulda Geirlaugsdóttir and
violinist Audur Hatsteinsdóttir, will
give concerts at the Winnipeg Art
Gallery on Tuesday, May 19, 1987
at 8:00 p.m. and at the Boris
Roubakin Hall, University of
Calgary, Wednesday, May 20,
1987 at 8:00 p.m. The concerts are
partly sponsored by the Government
of Iceland.
Hulda was born in Reykjavík on
April 9, 1963 and brought up there.
She started her musical education in
the Reykjavík Music School for
Children at the age of 7. In 1975 she
entered the Reykjavík College of
Music where she studied piano, first
with Mrs. Steingrímsdóttir and then
with Mrs. Eiríksdóttir until she
graduated as a solo performer in
1985. In 1985-'86 she studied piano
in West Berlin with Professor Georg
Sava. Since autumn 1986 she's been
a student of Mr. Leonard Shure at the
New England Conservatory of Music
in Boston.
Audur was born in Reykjavík

September 24, 1965. She started play-
ing the violin at the age of 8 where
her teacher was Gígja Jóhannsdóttir.

SIGURLIN HOLMFRIDUR ROED.
Sigurlin was born and educated at
Gimli, Manitoba. She is the daughter
of the late Daniel Helgi Danielson
(Arnes, Manitoba) and Gudrun
Jonina Gudmundson (Hesk, North
Dakota), presently living at Betel in
Gimli. Sigurlin's paternal grand-
parents were Daniel Danielson of
Hunavatnsysia, Iceland, and his wife,
Maria Benjaminsdottir. Her maternai
grandparents were Jon Gudmundson
and Gudrun Simonsdottir from the
Skagafjordur area in Iceland. Mater-
nal great-grandparents were Gudar
Gislason and Sigrudur Simonars-
dottir.
Sigurlin taught school at Vestfold
and Minerva. For 11 years she was
employed as a children's teacher at
the St. Boniface Hospital in Win-

nipeg. She was involved in the Sun-
day school program at First Lutheran
Church for several years.
For the past 12 years Sigurlin has
been actively involved in the Icelan-
dic National League assuming the
role of Secretary from Holmfridur
Danielson. She is presently the
Financial Secretary with the League.
During this time, she took part as Ex-
ecutive member on the Fron Chapter
of the Icelandic National League.
Sigurlin is currently the represen-
tative on the Canada Iceland Foun-
dation Board for the Icelandic Na-
tional League and the Lögberg-
Heimskringla.
Sigurlin is presently active as Board
Member for Lögberg-Heimskringla
and committee member on the H.I.P.
Campaign Board.
She had led an Icelandic study
group for a number of years. Sigurlin
has been to Iceland on two occasions.
Sigurlin married Sverre Roed in
1946. Together, they have five
children: Ingrid (Ottawa); Lyle, Chris
and Mark (Winnipeg); Deborah
(Toronto). There are four
grandchildren.
Sigurlin is a well known and
respected lady in the Icelandic com-
munities. She is truly devoted to her
Icelandic heritage. Together with all
members of Icelandic associations,
we take pride in acknowledging this
fine lady. We congratulate her in her
appointment as FJALLKONA and in
all her future endeavours.

Auður Hafsteinsdóttir, Violin
She continued her studies at the
Reykjavík Conservatory with Gudný
Gudmundsdóttir and graduated with
a solo performance degree in 1983.
Since then, Audur has been a student
of Dorothy DeLay and Paul Kantor
at the New England Conservatory of
Music in Boston and finished her BM
(Bachelor of Music) degree this
spring.
At the Tangelwood Music Festival
Audur was awarded the C.J. Jackson
award for outstanding achievement.
She has played concerts in Boston
and N.Y. and recently did a live per-
formance on Robert J. Lurtsemas
radio show WGBH.
