Hecla Island
Heritage?
Just writing to say how much I
have enjoyed your paper and, in
particular, a couple of recent arti-
cles about the history of Icelanders
in Manitoba.
I do recall reading of the Hecla
Island Heritage group last fall but
do not remember seeing anything of
the claiming of the island by the
Manitoba Government as a park. If
you did publish something in this
regard I’m sorry I missed it. But I
have heard some stories that the
residents of this lovely island were
treated rather badly by the Mani-
toba Government and are now try-
ing to reclaim their homes.
Would it be possible that a story
be done on this subject in order that
those of us attending the Icelandic
National League convention this
May can have a better understand-
ing of the situation?
Best regards,
Grant Carlson

time, Iam hoping thatsomeone from

us with some relevant, up-to-date
information.

Hallson area
restoration
We, along with American cousins,
are nearing the completion of a farm-
yard cemetery restoration in the Hallson
area of Pembina County, N.D., and
seek information with the help of
Lögberg-Heimskringla readership.
Footstones uncovered were of Lára,
Emilía, Aróra, and Alexander, infant
children of Kári Thórarinson who is
also buried there along with his par-
ents, Thórarinn Árnason and Gróa
Jónsdóttir. Burials were from 1897 to
1911.
Kári’s brother Magnús Thórarinson
lived on the next farm south. Magnús
and Elizabeth, with family, moved to
Everett, Washington, early in this cen-
tury. We seek relatives who may know
more about burials in the cemetery.
Magnús was the same person who had
written an article conceminghis grand-
father, Jón Andrésson.which appeared
in Ólafur S. Thorgeirson’s Almanak
1930.
Any information would be appreci-
ated as a commemorative service is
planned at the site in May, 1992. Please

Sponsor ideas needed
I belong to the Canadian Icelan-
dic Horse Federation and am writ-
ing in hopes that some of your read-
ers will be interested in sponsoring,
or coming up with sponsor ideas for
some of our wonderful Canadian
Icelandic Horses to participate in
the 1993 World Championships in
Amsterdam. Canada does not al-
ways ride their own horses in these
events due to the costs involved in
getting the horses to the country
More Computer Info
A reader in the February 14 issue
asked about word processing pro-
grams that will handle Icelandic
letters. I know that there is an Ice-
landic version of WordPerfect avail-
able. You can probably even get
an Icelandic “dictionary” for the
spelling checker. Since WordPerfect
will create the letters graphically,
any dot matrix or laser printer will
normally work. WordPerfect Cor-
poration’s address for the United
States and Canada is: 1555 N. Tech-
nology Way, Orem, UT 84057.
Owners of WordPerfect may also
be able to use the “compose” feature
to combine existing characters for
an approximation of the Icelandic
characters. This is a little tedious, but
the process can be automated by
macros. Be sure to change the lan-
guage setting to Icelandic in the
“set-up” menu (<SHIFT>+<F1>).
I hope this information will be
useful.
Sincerely,
Lars Pemer

Three horses are being prepared
for this event; all three were born in
Iceland but are now living in
Vernon, B.C. — true Western Ice-
landers. Léttir is one of the stallions
at the Icelandic Horse Farm;
Djarfur, gelding, Iceland Horse
Farm, was the high point horse at
the Gaited Horse Show in Langley,
B.C. in 1991; and Frændi, gelding,
Icelandic Horse Farm, holds the Ca-
nadian Pace record.
Hopefully, a couple of other
horses will also be able to go to this
event. If you are willing to sponsor,
or have a good idea to help raise
money, would you please contact

eration, site 20 Comp. 9, R.R. #1,
