Big Point gathering...
July2,1994, just east ofLangruth
Icelanders love to
gather, and this year
on July 2, 1994, just
east of Langruth at the
Big Point monument (old
Big Point hall site) the
100 year (1894 - 1994)
Dedication Plaque hon-
ouring the first Icelandic
settlers and the many who
came after will be cel-
ebrated.
It will start at 3:00
p.m., and after the dedica-
tion, speeches and touring
of old homesteads, Big
Point Cemetery etc., peo-
ple will gather at the
Langruth hall for an eth-
nic lunch, visiting and
entertainment. A dance
will cap off the day. The
Lutheran church will have
a special service the next
dáy (July 3) celebrating 65
years in the present
church. Prior to that, the
church services had been
held in the Big Point Hall
and in homes.
Families are being
asked to make a display of
pictures of their family to
be shown in the hall. We
are selling license plates
and mugs.
Five original pioneers
and their families who
came in 1894 were: Davíð
and Guðbjörg Valdimar-
son and four children;
Ásmundur and Kristjana
Guttormson and two girls,
Svava and Kristín; Bjarni
and Sigríður Davíðson
and girls Jódís, Gyða and
Sigríður and also Bjami’s
brothers Eiríkur and
Július; Tryggvi Ásgeir and
Margaret Jónason and
Stefán and Hólmfríður.
Böðvar and Guðrún
Johnson came to Wild
Oak, just south of Big
Point. That farm will be in
the descendants’ owner-
ship 100 years in 1994.
It would be great if any
descendants of these fami-
lies would contact us.
All the Icelanders in
the area considered Big
Point as home. The
church and all social
activities centred around
the school and hall. So
you see, even though invi-
tations have been sent out
as reminders, everyone is
welcome to join in this
dedication.
We need volunteers to
make ethnic food as well
as provide entertainment.
Write to Ola Czeranko,
Box 114, Langruth,
Manitoba, R0H 0N0, or
Rena Arksey, Box 103,
Langruth, Manitoba, R0H
0N0.
Hope to see you
this July!

To those in connection with
LögbergHeimskringla, I
wish to express my sincere
thanks for an article which
appeared in your November 26
issue, “Looking Across
Generations”.
I know that if my grandfather
and my mother were still with
us, that they too would feel
equally appreciative as do I, for
such an excellent presentation of
a beautifully written article by
Kirsten Wolf.
Enclosed is my one year
subscription to Lögberg-
Heimskringla, plus a $100.00
donation as a token of my
appreciation.
Very sincerely,
Eleanor Oltean.
