Chapter of the iODE
held their annual
presentation of
Scholarships.
Nine scholarships
were awarded.
1 The Johanna Gudrun
Skaptason IODE
Memorial Scholarship
Two worthy students were
chosen as recipients. They
Were Earl Johannes Shaw
^nd Kelvin Melsted.
a) Earl Shaw, Treherne,
Manitoba, is presently
enrolled in first year
Engineering at the University
of Manitoba. Earl’s dedica-
tion to educational achieve-
nient and his ability to stay
focused on his goals, has
resulted in a remarkable level
°í performance in school and
community.
Activitiés include a variety
°f sports, chess, writing arti-
des, participating in Youth
Earliament at the Manitoba
Eegislature, attending confer-
ences, church camp counsel-
lor, volunteering at Hospital
and Care Home as well as
Participating in many differ-
ent extra-curricular activities
at school.
Earl had excellent marks
all through his school grades
graduating at the top of his
class and receiving the
Governor General’s Medal
and the Science award,
among others. The Provincial
Ehysics exam mark was 93
and an A+ in French prompt-
ed Earl to work at improving
hjs oral French. He took a
six week course at St.
Eoniface College this past
summer and received the
highest class mark.
Both references attest to
Earl’s intelligence and
strength of character.
Earl Johannes Shaw
Proudly carries the name
his íate grandfather,
Johannes Helgi Magnusson.
b) Kelvin Melsted, Arnes,
Manitoba is currently attend-
mg first year Engineering at
the University of Manitoba.
To quote one of his teach-
ers: “While taking the tough-
est courses available, he has
been an A student consis-
tently... he served as our
Student Council President
providing us with humour r
and vitality. Kelvin is a fine
athlete... he was our male
athlete of the year.”
Kelvin’s classes were
loaded with Mathematics
and Science classes. He
received five scholarships on
the local, provincial and
national level,
Balancing this, his English
teacher says: “Kelvin has
demonstrated above average
ability with respect to the
written word, oral presenta-
tion and interpretation of lit-
erature... etc.”
For a class project in
History 200, ICelvin traced
his family history. In so
doing, he enjoyed learning
the history of “New Iceland”
c 1876. To quote: “It made
me extremely proud and
interested in my culture.”
Kelvin is the son of Alex
and Eleanor Melsted.

Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship resulted
in a “tie”. The recipients
were Alison Miller and Kelly
Drummond.
a) Alison Miller, Lundar
Manitoba, is taking teacher
training at Brandon Uni-
versity.
She graduated from High
School with honours and
received three awards.
Alison has been very
active in school, church and
community.
She volunteered in a peer
helping program at school
and used excellent communi-
cation slcills to counsel and
train others.
Volunteer hours were
given to 4H Club, Lundar
Rink events, swimming pool,
Day Care and Vacation Bible
School.
For six years Alison
played flute in the school
band, also in the Lakeshore
Divisional Band.
In Grade 12 Alison
helped plan events with the
Grad Committee.
Her parents are Stan and
Shannon Miller and her
grandmother is Sigrun Miller
(Johanneson).
b) Kelly Drummond, Neep-
awa, Manitoba, attending the
Faculty of Science, Uni-
versity of Manitoba. She
plans to become a pharma-
cist.
Kelly was an Honour Roll
student through her school
years.
She was active on the
Yearbook, Graduation and
School Travel Committees in

leadership roles. One high-
light was helping plan and
raise funds for a trip to
London and Paris.
Kelly has had ten years of
piano lessons and also
played flute in a number of
bands, one of which partici-
pated in the Neepawa Fine
Arts Festival as well as the
Provincial Festival.
She has been active in
church, various sports, vol-
unteered at the Day Care
Centre and taken St. Johns
and Red Cross Life Saving
Skills.
In the summer Kelly has
worked part time at the
Neepawa Pharmacy.
3 Music Scholarship
Rhea Mossman of Win-
nipeg qualified for this schol-
arship. She is attending the
University of Manitoba, first
year, School of Nursing.
Rhea also has a gift for
music and her total resume
was impressive.
Rhea graduated from Fort
Richmond Collegiate with
excellent marks, having par-
ticipated in Student Council
activities and still finding
time to sing.
She has studied voice with
Helga Anderson for three
years. In 1992 she received
highest marks in Royal
Conservatory Grade 4
Singing Exam (Silver Medal
Award); in 1993 she won
First Class Honours with
Distinction (99%) from
Royal Conservatory of Music
Exams in Theory of Music.
Rhea has sung in choral
groups and taken the leading
role in school musicals for
three years. She also was a
finalist in both 1992 and
1993 in the Winnipeg Music
Festival.
Rhea has been described
as a “leader and a beautiful
role model for the younger
singers.”
She is the daughter of
Charles and Marian
Mossman.
After the presentation,
Rhea sang for the assembly,
accompanied by Helga
Anderson. She indeed lived
up to our expectations.

Thorsteinson IODE
Memorial Scholarship
Diana Isliefson of Win-
nipeg was the recipient of
this scholarship.
Diana has a Bachelor of
Science in Civil Engineering
and is now taking her
Masters in view of becoming
a City Planner/Urban
Designer.
Diana, an Honours stu-
dent, comes highly recom-
mended by two of her profes
sors who have encouraged
her toward this goal.
She is enthusiastic about
her graduate studies, com-
mitted to her work and capa-
ble of leadership.
Diana has received several
scholarships and works at
Engineering related jobs dur-
ing summer periods.
Her parents are Thorstein
(Cecil) & Deanna Isliefson.
Deanna was an Isfeld.
5 The Snjolaug Gillis
IODE Memorial
Scholarship
This scholarship was pre-
sented to Kristjana Fjeldsted
of Winnipeg.
Kristjana is in second year
at Red River Community
College in a registered nurs-
ing program and is on the
Student Council.
Her marks are high, her
recommendations are excel-
lent. She “enjoys nursing
immensely” especially work-
ing with children and the
elderly. She has great deter-
mination to achieve.
Recommendations refer to
her in terms of honest, con-
scientious, hard working;
also kind, caring and pleas-
ant.
Her parents are Freeman
and Lily Fjeldsted.
