Bæjarins Bestu Pylsur — Their hot dogs are so good that even the pigeons and robins try to eat there.
Anyone who was
born and brought
up in Reykjavík and
has lived abroad for some
time, dreams of visiting the
harbour front hot dog stand
that sells the Bæjaríns Bestu
or Town’s Best hot dpgs.
Yes, it has been around for
so long that it dates back
before Reykjavík became a
city. Therefore... Bæjaríns
Bestu or Town’s Best.
Operated by the same
family since its opening in
1943 it claims its own secret
formula that is even to be
found in the all-important
mustard.
Well, 1 made my pilgrim-
age to the stand, somewhat
hesitantly though, as a
friend that did the same
some time ago expressed to
me his disappointment. I
must say that I was not dis-
appointed at all. I got mine
the same way as usual, eina
með öllu or one with eveiy-
thing on it. I thoroughly
enjoyed eating it while
watching the boats docked
nearby. No waiting to be
seated there.
The stand is said to be
the most profitable busi-
ness in the country. This is
easy to believe when one
looks at the traffic and the
size of the little shack... not
much more than a 5x8
sheet of plywood in square
footage.
On your next visit, you
will surely want to try this
Reykjavík tradition. Enjoy
eating at this open air
“restaurant”. No chairs or
protection from the ele-
ments here. In fact, the
worse the weather, the bet-
ter they taste. Believe me,
it’s worth it, or, perhaps I
am just being a little nostal-
gic. BIRGIR
