Lögberg-Heimskringla - 04.03.1994, Blaðsíða 6
6 • Lögberg-Heimskringla • Föstudagur 4. mars 1994 The compassionate people of lcelandair Icelandic born woman, Mrs. Hulda Cole and her three children, can’t belive their good fortune that has come to them at last. In short, the family difficulties started almost immediately after Hulda Cole moved with her husband, that she had met and married in Iceland, to his home State, Alaska. Apparently the man showed a side to him that he had managed to hide while in Iceland. What faced Hulda was to live in an isolated place outside Fairbanks with- out much contact with other people. That in itself she could have handled, but when her husband started abusing the children she could take no more. It took her four years to finally see him off to jail for a ten year term and further five years of no communica- tion with the children. FAMILYl FUNERAL COUNSELLQRS Finding herself pennyless and trapped, she wrote to Anna Bjarnason, reporter for Morgunblaðið in Florida who brought the family’s difficulties to the attention of the papers readers. The good people of Icelandair, the company and its staff, pooled together and brought Hulda and her children to Iceland arriving at Keflavík February 1, only two weeks after her situation was brought to attention. After her ordeal, Hulda looks for- ward to a new life. She is under- standibly extremely greatful to Icelandair and its staff and to Anna Bjarnason for drawing attention to her problems. We wish them all well. BIRGIR Choices. . . Skardal Baldur, Manitoba On tiny plot of English soil a quiet rain is falling. Through the trees, on gentle breeze, a voice seems to be calling. And in the sky a brown bird flies, while far away a mother cries for her prairie boy — a farmer’s son. No parent’s fears, nor sweetheart’s tears could turn his head from duty on distant shore where bombs of war would mar that country’s beauty. The youthful games were put away; “He’ll shoot! He’ll score!” another day, that prairie boy — a farmer’s son. But on that distant misty isle amid war’s grim reality, struck down, too soon, by wracking ills, he found his own mortality. And angel’s quest at God’s behest, found a final place of rest for the prairie boy — a farmer’s son Instead of golden wheat head’s sway, white crosses march in stark array across that field where breezes and promise him good company. A brown bird sings and soars aloft while flowers waft their fragrance CHESS: soft, for the prairie boy — a farmer’s son Inside a tiny prairie home a woman holds a teapot... small, softly smiles as she recalls an uncle’s gentle teasing. And prairie hearts through passing years will share her private smiles and tears Remembering... Remembering, their prairie boy — a farmer’s son NOTE: “The Prairíe Boy’ was wrítten in memory of the author’s uncle BiII (WiIIiam Guðmundur Anderson), a Wynyard, Saskatchewan boy who died in England in 1943 while serving with the Canadian Army. He is thought of often... not just on November 11 th. Wm. Guðmundur Anderson was the son of Hannes and Margaret (Egilson) Anderson, and the grandson of Skuli Arneson (Anderson) and his wife Sigriður Eríendsdóttir. Skuli and Sigriður landed at WiIIow Point on October 22, 1875 with that first party of Icelanders. They filed for a homestead a half-mile north of Boundry Creek, naming it “Bræðraborg. ” While farming there Skuli was honored by Lord Dufferin, Governor-GeneraI of Canada, receiving a medal for progress in agriculture. In March of 1881 Skuli and Sigriður and their little family (one of them Hannes), were in the first party of Icelanders to settle in Argyle Mun- icipality. Donna L. Skardal Top lcelanders To Compete Here Two of Iceland’s strongest grandmasters have confirmed they will play in the 1994 Canadian Open in Winnipeg. Margeir Pétursson and Jón Árna- son will compete in the open tourna- ment, set for July 9-17 at the Winnipeg Convention Centre. With a 2560 rating, Pétursson is one of the world’s elite grandmasters, while Árnason’s 2530 rating also makes him a formidable opponent in inter- national competitions. Chess is a national passion in Iceland. With fewer than 300,000 people, it boasts more grandmasters per capita than any other country in the world. The government offers Join . ..
