"Kraftlýsi" is a new company which produces cod liver oil arjd shark liver oil. The anoual production of cod liver oil is I00 tons and it is sold to Norway where it is marketed with a Norwegian label and sold as medicine. Shark liver oil was an important export commodity in by-gone years and was used as lamp fuel, but in recent years it has been studied for use in medicine. Many believe shark liver oil is anticarcinogenic as well as shark carti- lage which has been used for treating many ailments., Icelandic Kitty litter: ■ The company "Vikur h.f." has been producing kitty litter from pumice since last summer. The managers of "Vikur" are not aware of this product being made from pumice any- where else in the world. About 150,000 litres of kitty litter was recently shipped to Holland where it has been sold in many stores, with good results. Marketing has begun in other countries as well. The pumice is dried in special dryers, then cleaned, sifted, graded and finally packaged in 10 litre containers. The product is free from pollutants and can be disposed of in the yard where it improves the environment, whereas imported products are too acidic. The price is reasonable. This product can also be used on icy streets and for pot- ting plants. Adventures in Greenland: ■ Jens Jörgen "Ono" Fleischer, an Arctic explorer from Green- land is in lceland on a lecture tour spon- sored by the tourism industry in lceland énd Greenland. He will travel widely in lceland to talk about Greenland's culture, and travel opportuni- ties in that country. He will also talk about his trip from Thule in Northern Greenland across Canada to Alaska. This was a 100 day, 4,000 km trip using dog sleighs, which he made along with his travel companion, Jens Danielsen. Ono, who is a boat builder, hunter and teacher has travelled extensive- *y d°g sleighs in Greenland. He is also a great enthusiast about Greenland's culture and language, as well as Inu culture. GUNNUR ISFELD y Þorrablót in Edmonton By Judith Jonsson Fun, food and fancy foot- work was the keynote of the Norðurljós (Icelandic Society of Edmonton) Þorra- blót held February 19, 1994, at the Club Macombo in St. Albert, Alberta. 167 participat- ed in the fun of door prizes and contests — oldest and youngest in attendance, longest name (decided by the number of let- ters in the name), who had come the farthest to attend and many more. Families had the opportunity to get together. Friendships were renewed and new friends made. The delicious meal of roast beef, fried chicken and all the trimmings was enhanced by the presence of Hangikjött, Sildar Salat, Rúllapylsa á Rúgbrauð, Skyr, Vínarterta, and Pönnu- kökur and other traditional Þorrablót foods. Needless to say, “No one went away hun- gry,” or less than delighted by the fare. Fancy footwork was demon- strated by the Vatnabyggð Dancers from the Wynyard District in Saskatchewan. A big “thank you” to them for reviv- ing some of the dances of Iceland! The event was not without its “pomp and ceremony” and opened with the singing of both the Canadian and Icelandic national anthems. Members of the Saga Singers in attendance Cont'd p. 4 Helga (Finnson) Rennie and granddaughter Brittney Margaret Rennue, youngest person attending, age 5. Conference getting set by Jón Asgerirsson, Reykjavík AGeneral Meeting of the Icelandic National League was held in Reykjavík on the 30th of March 1994. The Iceland ’94 Conference was thorough- ly discussed, preparations are well underway and according to schedule and it is hoped that many people will attend, both from Canada and the USA as well as from Europe. The role of the Central Office in Reykjavík was also on the agenda, and the future of this Office, which depends more or less on the continued support from the Government and the City of Reykjavík. It is obvious that there is a need for the services rendered by the Central Office and every- thing will be done in order to secure the continuation of this operation. It was decided that in a few weeks time an open meeting will be held where the INL’s activities will be introduced and discussed and a special effort will be made in order to have people join the League/ The INL’s financial situation is satisfactory but more support is needed if the Central Office and other activities are to be maintained and secured in the future. Jón Ásgeirsson was re-elected President of the League for a two year period, others re-elected for one year are Jón Ármann Héðinsson, Krisitbjörg Ágústsdóttir and Teitur LÁrusson. Guðjón Einarsson takes the fifth seat on the board instead of Baldvin Jónsson. Iri reserve for one year are Magnús Sigurjónsson, Unnur Konráðsdóttir, both re-elected and new is Þórdís Jónsdóttir. It was the general opin- ion of the meeting that the co-operation with the INL the recent year had been very pleasant and success- ful and is greatly appreciated.
