lcelandic Classes in Public Schools
By Kendra Jónasson and Carol Mowat
During the past one hundred
years Icelandic has been
taught in one form or anoth-
er, somewhere in Manitoba. People
have offered to teach the language
where ever they perceived an interest
and the opportunity to establish
courses. These have ranged from ele-
mentary to University levels. Two
years ago Margaret Wishknowski,
who had taught Icelandic in
Riverton Elementary School for
many years retired. That meant there
was no longer any class being taught
Icelandic in public schools in
Manitoba. Meanwhile, some students
of Icelandic had decided that the time
was right to re-establish Icelandic
Courses in public schools. In a matter
of two days efforts were begun.
Now two years later, new classes
are under-way; the response has
been enthusiastic. Students in the
elementary class in Hastings
Elementary school, Winnipeg,
learned about the jólasveinar and
entered an L-H contest.

This class has now been separated
into 2 levels. The lst High School

a short skit based on “Gisli Saga”,
the Saga they have been studying.
This skit will be first produced and
presented for the 1994 INL Annual
Convention to be held in Selkirk,
Manitoba. This class the students are
taking has not only introduced them
to Icelandic for the first time, but
also has demanded their first public
presentation entirely in Icelandic.
At this time the Icelandic
Heritage Language Association is
considering holding two high school
level courses next year. The
Association, of course, would appre-
ciate hearing from prospective stu-
dents and/or parents as soon as pos-
sible.
Our teachers for these classes are
Gunnvör Ásmundsson teaching the
elementary program and Carol
Mowat teaching the high school
credit program. Without our won-
derful teachers this idea would never
have worked, and we wish to thank
them for their much hard work and
dedication.
