Kirsten Wolf, Head ofthe lcelandic Chair had good news about the depart- ment. - - There was a wonderful turnout for the Convention. The Selkirk Regional Choir sang perfectly in lcelandic and gave a wonderful performance. Face of the future There were people of all ages at the INL convention in Selkirk last weekend, from 98 on down. The mix was a testimony to the vigour of the Icelandic culture in North America. One of the most dedicated of the people in attendance was 12-year-old Jonathan Skrypnyk of Selkirk. He Iis- tened to the speeches and attended the workshops, taking copious notes while he was there. Jonathan is of mixed Icelandic and Ukrainian descent. He is equally proud of both bloodlines, but on that week- end he was there to learn about his Icelandic heritage, not just for the school project he is working on, but because he cares about it. We worry a lot about what the future holds for the North American Icelandic community. It lies, of course, ultimately with our children, and that was one of the themes of this year’s convention in the year of the family. If we can take Jonathan as an example, the future of the Westem Icelanders is in good hands. Jonathan’s Icelandic connection comes through his mother, Sylva (Magnuson) Skrypnyk, who is the daughter of Eva and Jón Magnuson. We hope to see him and a lot more like him at many future conventions. The Geysir Quintet (minus one) A group of many names They go by many names, but they are showing up all over the place at Icelandic events in Manitoba. At the Arborg Thorrablót, they were the Winnipeg Icelanders. At the INL convention in Selkirk, they were the Geysir Quintet (minus one for their first performance) accompanied on the piano by Kristine Johnson. They sing in both Icelandic and English, and were a great hit In Selkirk, on the opening night of the convention, they gave a performance and later led the delegates in a sing- along that met with enthusiastic par- ticipation. It was one of the high- lights of the weekend and an event which prompted one person bom in Iceland to wonder whether everyone taking part could really be Western Icelanders, so good was the language and so familiar the songs. They are David Gislason, Thor Johanneson, Bragi Simundsson, Melvyn Eyolfson and Marino Sigvaldason, and while no one can know what name they will appear under next, we all look forward to seeing them again.
