county recently held a week's celebra-
tion, with the theme "The Fiftieth

Kári flew to Raufarhöfn:
■ "Kóri" the swan
who has resided at
the Reykjavík Pond
most of his life and
cau.sed some traffic
disturbances in thé
surrounding area
with his bold behav-
ior, was flown to
naufarhöfn recently. Raufarhöfn is about
far from Reykjavík as you can get on
“ry land. Perhaps the political atmos-
Phere in Reykjavík lately has bothered
hirn- ^ari now lives in the wetland by the
Pond in Raufarhöfn and seems happy
there. He has already become popular
w'th the children in Raufarhöfn, and at
times he takes a stroll to the main street
of town to check out the traffic. He has
iscovered that it is less hazardous than in
capital.
GUNNUR ISFELD
On June 2, 1994, an event took place in the
Vestfold District that should serve as an
inspiration to Western Icelanders evefy-
where. On a farm at the junction of Provincial Road
#229 and Provincial Road #518, there was the dedi-
cation of a cemetery. It is no ordinary cemetery but
the resting place of the original Icelandic pioneers.
Over the years, it had fallen into disrepair, until Ron
Eyolfson decided to do something about it.
With his own money, his own time, and on his
own initiative he has restored the Vestfold Cemetery
so that it now looks once again like the hallowed,
historic ground that it is.
Lögberg-Heimskringla President Neil Bardal
served as master of ceremonies. Einar Arnason (see
page 3 for a brief account of the event by Einar) gave
a short, touching reminiscence of his childhood in
the area when he and Ron were kids, and Pastor
Ingthor Isfeld gave a moving speech of dedication.
The program for the event contained an article by
Stefan Stefanson of Gimli, reprinted from Lögberg-
Heimskringla. In part, Stefan says — and here is the
message we should all heed — “The Icelandic com-
munity can be justly proud of Mr. Eyolfson for his
Ron, Herdis & Laurence Eyolfson
significant contribution and may it inspire other
communities to do likewise. It is yet another mile-
stone in the preservation of our heritage.
