sponsored Saturday’s activities.
We capped off Summer Solstice
Days with an ecumenical service at
Grund on Sunday and the Brandon
Icelandic Club joined us. After church
we all met at Vernos’ for kaffi bolla
and talk. Gossipy geneology revealed
we were pretty well all related.
To all who took part Takk Fyrir og
Bless! Our next raid on the world will
take place July 16 & 17 at Holland,
Festival of Nations. Come and join us
and we will all capture a bit of fun.

Party Reached Manitoba?)
Summer Solstice
Days In Baldur
by Grace Hjalmarsson
Astellar event took place in
Baldur on June 24-26. We set
aside the weekend closest to
the summer solstice to remember the
Norse god Baldur whom we have
adopted as our “Patron Saint”, our
town becuring his name.
The celebration began with a Kaffi
Hús at Vemos’ Country Kitchen and
the weather co-operated beautifully so
we had most of our crowd outside.
A bake table of Icelandic goodies
manned (womanned?) by authentical-
ly costumed ladies was out in front of
Vernos’. These favorite Icelandic
foods and genuine sock coffee sold at
a brisk pace.
We raffled a hamper replete with
Icelandic treats such as knitting, bak-
ing, a book of folklore and a cushion
embroided with Baldurspra, the
flower which was said to spring up
wherever the god Baldur walked.
Since we didn’t have Glíma we did
what Vikings have always done. We
simply raided a neighbouring district
and stole what we wanted. We cap-
tured the Belmont Tae Kwon Do Club
and their Korean expertise added real
punch to the day.
Paul Vigfusson emceed a band of
“mixed nuts” called the Hola
Huldufolk who played good old
Canadian down-home music with
some Icelandic singing thrown in.
The Tug-o-War, billed as Icelanders
against the World, was won by a mot-
ley crew of Vikings, some complete
with homs, who for their efforts won
a vínarterta. In the kids’ section the
girls won the first and the boys the
second bout.
The evening wound up with fire-
works and a street dance sponsored
by the Baldur Development
Committee, who also organized and

A MESSAGE FROM
RONALD H. EYOLFSON
Iwish to thank all the relatives
for their generous donations
towards this project.
I also want to give special thanks
to Stefania Morris for spearheading
this project and also special thanks
to Allan Eyolfson for keeping the
records and layout of the graves so
accurate. This project could not
have become a reality without these
records.
Unveiling of the Memorial was
held on May 29, 1994 and was well
attended by over 90 relatives and
friends.
