of The Family. The Icelandic Festival
of Manitoba is proud to incorporate
this theme into our festival.
This weekend has always been
special to people of Icelandic ances-
try. At this time an extra effort is
made to contact family members,
hold reunions and visit friends. I
remember as a child coming to the
Gimli park on Monday. Families
would have a picnic, partake in the
sporting events and enjoy each oth-
ers’ company. People would take a
break from mending their nets, all to
pay tribute to the Icelandic pioneers,
their sacrifices and achievements, as
well as to honor both Iceland and
Cánada.
With the advancement of air travel
and improvements to telecommuni-
cations the link between Iceland and
western Icelanders is becomeing clos-
er. Visits to Iceland are becoming
more common and many western
Icelanders have had an opportunity
to meet with Icelanders visiting
North America. This has been a great
boost in preserving the Icelandic cul-
ture and heritage.
In closing I hope that you enjoy
íslendingadagurinn, have a chance to
make new friends, renew acquain-
tances as well as spend time with
your family.
