Salome Þorkelsdóttir
alome Þorkelsdóttir was born
on July 3, 1927 in Reykjavík,
Iceland.
In 1945 she graduated from the
higher secondary grammar school
Kvennaskólinn in Reykjavík.
After holding administrative posi-
tions in 1945-1947 and 1969-1970 she
took on the position of Chief Cashier
for the local government of
Mosfellshreppur where she served
from 1970 to 1979.
Salome was a member of the dis-
trict council of Mosfellshreppur from
1966 to 1982 and held positions as
the Deputy Chairman of the council
from 1978 tö 1981 and Chairman for
the 1981 - 1982 term.
She has been a member of the
Central Committee of the
Independence Party since 1973.
Currently, Salome is Speaker of
Alþingi to which she was elected in
1991. She has been a member of
Alþingi for the Independence Party
since 1979. Other dignified positions
that she has held include: First
Deputy Speaker of the United Alþingi
1988-1991; Speaker of the Upper
House 1983-1987; Member of the
Icelandic delegation to the North
Atlantic Assembly 1987-1991.
Salome is married with three
grown children.

Shelley Deidre Jonasson, daugh-
ter of Harley Sigurdur Jonasson
and Sharon Jean Jonasson
(Oddleifson) received her Doctor of
Medicine degree at the Uiversity of
Manitoba at the June 1994 convoca-
tion. Shelley will be completing her
residency program in Psychiatry in
Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Shelley’s maternal grandparents
are Bobby and Gladys Oddleifson of
Loon Straits (formerly of Arborg,
Manitoba) and her paternal grand-
parents are the late Hafsteinn
Jonasson and Jonina Jonasson of
Riverton, Mantoba.
Shelley has a brother Brad and a
sister Jennifer who plan to follow in
their big sister’s footsteps.
Shelley’s great, great, great uncle
was the father of New Iceland,
Captain Sigtryggur Jonasson, and
also former editor and founding
member of the Lögberg newspaper.

Sylvia May Peiluck
ylvia May Peiluck was born in
Gimli in 1941. She is the daugh-
ter of the late Oli and Sylvia
Kardal. Her maternal grandparents
were Guðni and ICristín Þorsteinson.
Her paternal grandparents were Jon
and Guðfinna Kárdal. Both couples
emigrated to Canada from Iceland. Her
maternal grandfather, Guðni, emigrated
to Canada in 1885. He served as the
first secretary-treasurer of the R.M. of
Gimli and as postmaster in Gimli from
1891-1948. Her mother, Sylvia, taught
at Gimli and served as postmistress
from 1948-1952. Her father, Oli, was
well known as a concert soloist. He
often sang at the Islendingadagurinn
program accompanied on the piano by
his wife, Sylvia.
May attended her early school years
at Gimli but graduated from Murray
High School in St. Paul, Minn. U.S.A.
She returned to Canada to take her
teacher training at the Manitoba
Teachers College. She later obtained
her Bachelor of Arts from the Uni-
versity of Winnipeg.
May has been active in both the
community and in education. She has
served as president of the Gimli Figure
Skating Club, chairperson of the Gimli
Municipal Heritage Committee and
Professional Development Chairperson
for Evergreen Teachers Association.
She has also travelled to various towns
and cities in Manitoba inservicing
teachers of social studies for
Education Manitoba.
She married Tony Peiluck of Gimli
in 1971. They reside at the Peiluck
farm in the Minerva District. Their
farm’s Icelandic name is “Brosastaðir”.
They havé two children: Peter and wife
Kara (daughter of Ingvar and Doreen
Karvelson) and Margrose. Peter, a
graduate of the U of M Agriculture
Diploma program is employed by
Sigurdson Farms. Margrose, entering
Grade 12, also studies voice and piano
under Helga Anderson of Winnipeg.
