EINAR’S ANECDOTES
Gísli, Eiríkur & Heigi
he following
poem has been
translated from
Icelandic. It is based
on one of a series of
1 stories about three
brothers and their
father who lived at a remote location
by the ocean. They were considered
to be harmless oafs who continuously
made mistakes. If one said something
then the other two would repeat the
words uttered.
Their names were Gísli, Eiríkur,
and Helgi. It has been known that
their names have been used in vain,
when swear words were not appro-
priate, as for example if you stubbed
your toe the comment, “Gísli Eiríkur
Helgi”, would be deemed satisfactory,
for it satisfied the urge to swear indi- Three sons in total had,

The Riverbank Brothers
A small abode, named Bakki.
A crystal river past there flows,
Herrings small in crevices hide,
White rocks the bottom holds.
Everyday the river flows,
Heartily past their abode.
Continuously through the ages,
Adventure for young and old.
There I heard these stories,
As I listened to the river flow.
Once there lived at Bakki,
A farmer long long ago.
Gísli Eiríkur and Helgi.
Not like others were they,
According to descriptions of them.
Many felt they lacked,
Common sense within them.
Some of their unlucky joumeys,
Were often childlike.
Much there happened that was
funny,
And entertaining with delight.
Better than wisdom deep and wise,
Comments by fools are often accept-
ed.
Good it is to have Bakka brothers,
To laugh at what they concepted.
Those who feel of high esteem,
Would do better in modesty.
Clevemess can be cold,
Causing others to be feisty.
