Writing Your Life
St. Vital resident, Helen
Sigurdson has written a book, /
Wanted You to Know. She is
the first person in Tanya Lestor’s class
to complete the project of writing
your life story. This program is avail-
able through Age and Opportunity
with classes held at the Stradbrook
Senior Centre. The launching of her
completed book took place on June 9
at the Stradbrook Senior Centre. In
reporting about this event the MSOS
Journal stated, ..the challenge of
writing your life story has become a
captivating pastime for many seniors
who in many instances discover new
memories and new friends when they
leam how to write.”
Helen Sigurdson has been interest-
ed in genealogy for many years and
has been working at finding informa-
tion about her ancestors. She is basi-
cally interested in genealogy because
she believes that everyone is part of
history and history should be record-
ed for future generations to study.
She feels that it is especially impor-
tant that her own children and grand-
children are able to learn about the
lives of their ancestors. In each gener-
ation, there seems to be someone
interested in tracing his or her ances-
tors.
Helen is the daughter of Alphonse
and Flora Masse who farmed in
Starbuck, Manitoba. She married
Frank Sigurdson, the son of Jon and
Sigrun Sigurdsson of Vidir,
Manitoba. Helen and Frank were
both teachers until retirement.

Story
Helen’s book, I Wanted You To
Know, is the story of her life, the
story of family and friends and the
stoiy of the events of a lifetime. In it
she remembers growing up in a large
French Canadian family, going to
school in a horse drawn van, and
what life was like without electricity
and indoor toilets. She remembers
the annual threshing crews of men
who came to work and slept in
bunkhouses. There was no help for
the women who had to feed the extra
farm workers.
Her writing is organized in chap-
ters dealing specific areas in her life
incluing her childhood, spiritual life,
schools, health, traditions, holidays
and much more. She writes about her
travels and devotes a complete chap-
ter on a trip to Iceland that she and
her husband took in the summer of
1979.
Although Helen’s project, as a par-
ticular interest for her family and
friends, she has printed some extra
copies of her book. A limited number
are availaible at Tergesen’s store in
Gimli or by contacting her.
