She was greeted at the airport by her boyfriend, Ingólfur Már, her parents, Bragi Guðmundsson, a chef, and her mother Guðrún Gísladóttir, a teacher, as well as her younger siblings, Gísli Baldur and Ragna Björk. Her family and co- workers had a party for her where greet- ings and flowers arrived throughout the evening. Birna said that the competi- tion and its preparation had been diffi- cult. She now looks forward to starting school where she plans to complete col- lege at Garðabær at the end of the year or next spring. A Rare species: ■ These young fishermen trying their luck at so called Höepfners area recently noticed a strange fish wallowing in the shallow water. They took the fish to the University Research Station in Akureyri where the creature was thought to be vogmær "dealfish." The fish will be sent on to the Ocean Research Station where it will be examined by Gunnar Jónsson, an ichthyologist, and expert in distin- guishing strange creatures. Dealfish is described in a fish book by the before- mentioned Gunnar Jónsson: as 2-3 meters long, living mainly at 500-600 meter depth. Living habits are not well known but it is often found drifting on the foreshore. CUNNUR ISFELD . The Scandinavian Centre ups and downs by Magnus Eliason With an ageing pop- ulation, many of us at Winnipeg’s Scandinavian Centre real- ized, several years ago, that an elevator to the second floor was a necessity. I, myself find it difficult to climb those nineteen steps. Gone are the days when I could have a race with the elevator in the old McArthur building to the twelfth floor. Two years ago, the Board began to look at ways of raising the approx- imate $40,000 that was needed to put in an eleva- tor. The Winnipeg Found- ation awarded $15,000 to the Centre; some clubs and many individuals donated a total of approximately $15,000, and the Paul Albrechtsen family donat- ed $10,000. By last spring the $40,000 was raised, the renovations then began in preparation of the elevator installation. The elevator is now installed; it also gives wheelchair access to the entire building. The next step is to develop the Viking Room on the second floor as a lounge for members to enjoy a quiet and attractive meeting place with other members and friends. It is always difficult to single one person for praise. But I want to give special praise to Albert Nelson and Skuli Sig- fusson. Skuli arranged for, and worked with, the architect and the engineer. Albert was there every day to ensure that the con- struction progressed. Come on down! Have a ride on the new elevator! The INL honoured its retired members from the Board with a fes- tive dinner at the Minerva Hall in Gimli on Sunday, September 18th. It was the annual fall dinner for the Minerva Ladies Aid — and one that was scrumpdeli- cious! It was a bit of a “tum about” for the INL — as the custom for the annual event of honouring past Board members is a dinner out — corsage — presentations — and perhaps even a glass of wine. Not wanting to get into a “mt” — we thought this type of recognition would be something differ- ent. It was wonderful. Country air — good old fashioned home cooked food — familiar faces — and a touch of warm hospitality. Plaques of appreciation were presented to Bill Perlmutter (past Treasurer) Cont'd. page 2 PLEASE RENEW Some of our subscribers will have recently, or will soon receive, a final notice to renew their subscrip- tions. This is not an attempt to be rude on our part. It is, rather, an attempt to survive. Subscription money forms the bulk of L-H’s meagre rev- enues and your continued sup- port is needed to ensure that this newspaper, the only one serving the North American Icelandic community, contin- ues to publish. Continued indi- vidual reminder notices are expensive. Please continue to show your support for Lögberg-Heimskringla by renewing on time. We thank you for your sup- port and co-operation and remind you to watch for two special upcoming issues — the outreach issue in November and the annual Christmas edi- tion.
