Eimskip's New Ship:
• Seen here is Eimskip's newest cargo
ship, Bakkafoss, which was recently pur-
chased for $10.6 million. The ship had
previously been leased by Eimskip for
fransportation to the Nordic countries.
Eimskip has now rented another ship for
sailing to the USA, which will be named
Goðafoss. Both these ships, as well as
^ettifoss purchased in I99I, were built
hy "Sietas," a ship building company in
Hamburg, Germany. All three ships are
°f the same size with a carrying capacity
4I3 container units.
A Missing Tourist:
• A thirty year old Italian tourist was
Tissing and is believed to have fallen
•nto the Gullfoss falls.
The man arrived at
*he falls by bus at
noon. When he failed
returrt to the bus
hy its departure time,
People feared that
he might have
ir>to the falls, even
^hough no one had
seen or heard anything unusual. A 40
’tian rescue team from Árnessýsla was
ealled out. The area was searched on
hoth sides of the river for about 14 km.
A boat was sent out to search the river
as well as two helicopters. No trace of
^he man had been found when the
search was called off in the evening.

Eðvaldsdóttir
recently reached the sec-
ond stage of the world-
renowned Tchaikovsky
Violin Competition in
Moscow.
L-H is proud to con-
gratulate Sigrún who is
now among the final 20 in
the prestigious battle of
the bows.

Chicago. The Govemor commended leaders and the festival committee for con-
tinuing and sharing the Scandinavian culture and heritage with the citizens of

Vigdís and
lceland
Iceland was certain-
ly in the spotlight
on October 4 when
renowned news-
caster Peter Jenn-
ings was emcee for the
annual fund-raising gala at
New York’s Plaza Hotel
for the American-Scand-
inavian Foundation (ASF)
Iceland’s President
Vigdís Finnbogadóttir was
the guest of honour, and a
front row table for 10 was
priced at $10,000 U.S.
As in the past this
Nordic-American evening
celebrated the relationship
between the five Nordic
countries and the U.S., but
the main theme of the
evening was a celebration
of the 50th anniversary of
the Republic of Iceland.
President Finnboga-
dóttir, guest of honour,
was bestowed with the
Foundation’s Gold Medal.
The Foundation’s Cult-
ural Medal was awarded to
Mr. Gerhard Herberg, pres-
ident of the Lillehammer
Olympic Organizing Com-
mittee, as well as to Mr.
Peter Martins, director of
the Museum of Modern
Art, and Mr. Erik K. Friis,
editor.
Some wonderful enter-
tainment rounded off a per-
fect evening. Chairing the
gala event was Kristján T.
