Memoirs of Guðmundur Jónsson from
T
Húsey
JO THE SOUTH of
the Múlakollur
the mountain is
lower where the nesses
can be accessed. At
both Múli- and
Geldingsnes are found
remains of fishing sta-
tions and at Múli there
were two huts still
standing at the turn of
the century. Older men
told me that these
remains were there
from the time of the “hardship of the mist,” when a
great deal of livestock perished and starvation was
experienced at Hérað; then people sought to the sea
for sustenance. Shark hunting was outfitted from the
Múli while I remember, especially in late winter.
Guttormur Jónsson from Eyjasel operated there for
many years as did the Ketilsstaða-brothers. The men
who were lost in the avalanche in 1870, and I men-
tioned earlier, were Gunnlaugur Oddson’s fishermen
from Ketilsstaðir. After that incident winter fising
from the Múli was discontinued.
South of the Móvík the precipices end and the
Landsenda-mountain begins. It is almost free of cliffs
except for the old ocean rim, which is now called
Lónabjörg. According to the'folktales a cave was
located there long ago, and the housewife from that
abode still stand there.
She is probably the most
handsome stone-woman
to be found in Eastem
Iceland. Her story is
recorded in Jón Arna-
son’s Folktales, I, 215.
The Landsenda-moun-
tain is steep, slanting
from the mid-mountain
without large cliffs
except at Móvík. From it
there is no access to the
shore, but an old dry
riverbed can be followed up to mid-Móvíkurflug. It is
a deep rift filled with snow until midsummer. Thus
people either must walk on the snow ceiling or under
it and neither way is attractive. It happened that we
had to come ashore at the Móvík when landing was
impossible at Ker or on the sand and we had to use
this route; it was risky leaving boats there because of
rockslides. Continued on page 8

The Year
The year has four seasons, or
twelve months. The four seasons are:
summer, winter, spring and autumn.
The twelve months are: January,
February, March, April, May, June,
July, August, September, October,
November, and December.
The first month of the year is
January; then the snow is on the
ground. It covers the ground and all is
white. In February we sometimes have
much rain; it comes from the clouds.
This onth has only twenty-eight days,
except in leap-year; then it has one
more. The next month is March; we
now see some flowers, and we say,
"Spring is coming!" The days are less
short and the sun is warm; it is not hot.
In April there is no snow. The birds
sing in the green trees, and we go for
long walks. May is a lovely month; it is
warm now out of doors, and in the mid-
dle of the day it is sometimes quite hot.
Then we open the doos and the air
comes into the rooms and they are
cool. In June the roses are blooming in
the garden, and at the end of the
month cheries are ripe. What is the
colour of a ripe cherry? It is red or
black. The cherry is the fruit of the
cherry-tree.
That is the end of the first half of

Það eru fjórar árstíðir í árinu, eða
tólf mánuðir.
Árstíðirnar fjórar eru: sumar og
vetur, vor og haust.
Mánuðirnir tólf eru: janúar, febrúar,
mars, apríl, maí, júní, júlí, ágúst,
seftember, október, nóvember og
desember.
Janúar er fyrsti mánuður ársins; þá
er snjór á jörðu. Snjórinn þekur jörðina
og allt er hvítt. í febrúar rignir oft mikið;
það rignir úr skýjunum. Það eru aðeins
tuttugu og átta dagar í þessum
mánuði, nema þegar hlaupár er; þá er
einum fleiri. Næsti mánuður er maí; þá
birtast blóm og við segjum að vorið sé
komið". Dagarnir eru ekki eins stuttir
