The original L-Hfeatured articles in English and lcelandic ver- sions, but almost no pictures. Repmduction courtesy of the Icelandic Collection, University of Manitoha Forty years may not be longevity in the lifespan of a paper, but the total age of 111 to 113 years is definitely significant. The two Icelandic weeklies pub- lished in the New World, Heimskringla and Lögberg, amalgamated in 1959 and as a result this year marks the fortieth anniversary of the joint publication. As you know, Lögberg was first published in 1888,. and Heimskringla two years earlier, in 1886. The papers had been experiencing financial difficulties and after four years of serious discussion on how to proceed the conclusion was to join the forces behind these two publications to pub- lish one paper under the name Lögberg- Heimskringla. In the first issue are to be found many noteworthy, informative articles which are interesting to read forty years later. The front page carries fine articles by Thor Thors, then Ambassador to the U.S. and Canada, and Dr. P.H.T. Thorlakson, then president of the board. There is also a special greeting from then-President of Iceland, Hr. Ásgeir Ásgeirsson: “I rejoice over the amalgamation of the two Western-Icelandic papers. In patriotism we are one. We thank Lögberg and Heimskringla for a long tenure and wish the new publication well.” I think we will agree that continued publication of an Icelandic paper in North America was best ensured by this decision. Now we may ask, has I would like to respond to the June 25 article on “Choosing A Date For Leifur Eiríksson Day.” I am very much in favour of the proposed date of October 21 for the fol- lowing reasons: The rock at Willow Point is so his- torically significant to Canadians of Icelandic descent because that is where our ancestors first landed in “Nýja ísland.” The annual “Walk To The Rock” on October 21 has become an important event. Naming October 21 “Leifur Eiríksson Day” would not detract from the meaningful purpose of the “Walk To The Rock,” rather, it would enhance the significance because this would remind us of two intertwin- ing historical events—the landing of Leifur Eiríksson in North America and the landing of the Icelanders at Willow Point. Even the name “Nýja ísland” seems Lögberg-Heimskringla proven itself, or is it perhaps unnecessary to publish such a paper? Judging by the comments we receive from our subscribers the vote is overwhelmingly positive. We receive very few negative letters regarding content or appearance, and the readers seem to appreciate that with a very limited staff we cannot satisfy all. In the last few years during the time the undersigned has been at this job we have experienced an upsurge in interest among people we had never heard of before who are taking interest in their heritage by sending us articles and join- ing in discussions on the internet, another indication of the paper’s useful- to indicate that it was the “promised Land” for the Icelanders. Here the Icelanders governed themselves for twelve years in the “Republic of New Iceland.” And to think that October 21 was the beginning of all that! Manitoba has the largest number of Canadians of Icelandic descent in Canada and the Interlake area has more Icelandic-speaking citizens than any- where else in Canada. I also feel that October 21 would be the date of choice because of the contri- butions of the Manitoba Icelandic descendants to our culture: 1. We have in Winnipeg the most up-to-date and comprehensive líbrary of Icelandic books and periodicals in all of North America. 2. We have our exceptional news- paper, Lögberg-Heimskringla. 3. We have the Icelandic Chair at the University of Manaitoba. ness. Before us lies the millennium year of 2000, a year unlike any other in Iceland-Canada relations, with activi- ties and celebrations planned right across the country. These cultural events will celebrate the land discovery by Leifur Eiríksson one thousand years ago and the one hundred twenty-five years of settlement by Icelanders in Manitoba. I am certain that many of you will like to follow these events as they unfold and are written about in Lögberg-Heimskringla. Áfram með smjörið. 4. We have the lcelandic Canadian magazine. 5. We have íslendingadagurinn. 6. And last but certainly not least— thanks to the foresight and planning of the very descendants of the Icelanders who landed at the “rock” on October 21, 1875 we will soon be able to take pride in and enjoy the magnificent Betel Waterfront Centre. And to think that October 21 was the beginning of all this!
