GISLI SIGFUSSON
1934-2001
SUDDENLY ON SUNDAY, JUNE 10, at
the age of sixty-six, we lost Gísli
Julian (Siggi) Sigfusson, beloved
husband of Joyce, Father of Ardis
(Wayne Martyniuk, Arla (Kevin
Magalas), Blair (Karmen) and afi to Brett
Larissa and Troy Martyniuk and Danika
Magalas.
He also leaves to mourn his sister
Oleen (Ray), brothers Flovent (Rita) and
Elmer, sister-in-law Joan (Siggi), in-laws
Merle, Lloyd (Edna) and Evelyn, also
numerous nieces, nephews and fríends.
He was predeceased by infant son
Brendan, his mother and father Anna and
Gísli, two brothers Sigmar (Margaret),
and Skapti, brothers-in-law Larus and
Einar.
Gísli was born in Oakview in 1934.
He married Joyce in 1959 and they
resided in Winnipeg. He was a carpenter
by trade at which he worked until 1965
when he was employed by the City of
Winnipeg, Water and Waste Department
rising to the position of supervisor.
Always a hard worker, Gísli felt any
job worth doing was to be done properly.
He oílicially retired in 1995; however,
his strong work ethic continued in his
retirement years spending countless
hours helping his friends and family.
Behind the scenes he was the backbone
of Sigfusson Nursery Schools. He had
many hobbies, including travelling, curl-
ing, baseball, hunting, and snowmobil-
ing. His true passion was woodworking.
However, the majority of his time was
spent taking care of his family. Friends
young and old were drawn to Gísli’s
warm personality and were greeted with
the old familiar slap on the back. With
his beautiful smile and infectious laugh
he made everyone feel special.
Our family is a circle of love, and
Gísli was the centre always cai'ing, giv-
ing, comforting and loving. He played
endlessly and tirelessly with his adored
grandchildren, inventing games and
building “stuff’ as they went along. They
all agree with little Troy: “My afi ... my
best friend”.
A celebration of Gísli’s life and love
was held at St. Stephen’s Lutheran
Church, Mount Royal and Tumer (oíf
Ness) on Friday, June 15 at 2:00 pm.
Private internment.
In lieu of flowers donations may be
made to “KidSport” c/o Sport Manitoba,

“Rest in peace darling, we miss you
terribly already.”

Afew years ago I bought a strange
large “coin” thing. It is 6.9 cm in
diameter and came with a litle stand.
The language written on it looks like
Icelandic, but I have never found out
what it means. Can anyone please help
me identify the object?

Churchbridge, SK
This year Concordia Lutheran
Church at Churchbridge, Sask. is
celebrating its lOOth
Anniversary. Concordia was founded
by the Icelandic settlement on
November 5, 1901. The group that
strarted the church had belonged to
Thingvalla but found they were too far
from church and community and want-
ed a parish in their own district.
In 1963 Thingvalla Congregation
joined in membership at Concordia,
and in 1964 Peace German Lutheran
church merged with Concordia. On
August 5, 2001, Concordia is holding a
celebration at Churchbridge to com-
memorate the lOOth Anniversary. An
invitation has been extended to all who
had been baptized or confirmed in
Concordia. An invitation is also extend-
ed to anyone who may have been
missed or who would like to attend. It is
requested that you let the committee
know if you are coming so we can acco-
