‘I know what
it has meant’
On November 3, 125 years
had passed since world famous
explorer Vilhjálmur Stefánsson
was born in Arnes, Manitoba.
Vilhjálmur Stefánsson was
born on November 3, 1879.
Ninety years after his birth, a
memorial park was officially
opened and a monument was
unveiled in Árnes. On a stone
behind a statue of Vilhjálmur
Stefánsson is a sentence writ-
ten in Icelandic, French and
English: “Ég veit livað ég hefi
reynt og hvers virði það er
mér.” (“I know what I have
experienced, and I know what
it has meant to me.’j

About 500 people attended
Peter Bjornson’s pumpkin
party in Gimli the day before
Halloween.
Manitoba’s Minister of
Education Peter Bjomson held
his first annual pumpkin party
in Gimli at Gimli Park Pavilion
Saturday, October 30. There
were different kinds of con-
tests like a pumpkin carving
contest, pumpkin decorating
contest, a scarecrow building
contest and a costume contest.
People donated cakes and
prizes for a silent auction
which Peter Bjomson, dressed
like Gandalf from The Lord of
the Rings, coordinated with the
help of his assistant Jan Cher-
let, dressed like a witch. All
the proceeds went to the Heal-
ing Garden in the Gimli Health
Centre.
