Summary of the annual report of the Icelandic Meteorological Office 1990
The Icelandic Meteorological Office was divided into the following divisions: Admini-
stration, forecasting, computer, climatological, meteorological research, instrumental,
geophysical, aviation observation and sea ice divisions. 65 personnel positions were
occupied at the end of the year.
The number of stations was as follows: 50 synoptic, 35 climatological and 42 precipitation
stations. At 5 of the stations agrometeorological observations were made, 3 summer station
were operated, 1 station only for observations of wind, 2 for measurements of duration of
bright sunshine.
Weather messages were sent from 43 Icelandic ships.Upper air observations were made at
Keflavík airport at 12 and 24 GMT. The total number of radiosonde observations (RAOB)
was 715 and wind observations (RAWIN) were 710. At the station írafoss samples were
collected for chemical analysis of some major pollutants in air and precipitation. Ozone
observations were made regularly at Reykjavík. 23 seismological stations were operated and
7 borehole strainmeter stations.
Weather reports and forecasts for Iceland and the surrounding sea banks were broadcast 9
times daily, and special voice broadcasts on short wave from coastal stations intended for
shipping 4 times daily.
Forecasts for the banks were broadcast in English 4 times daily. Forecasts with a 48 and 72
hours validity period were issued daily. Weather maps were presented daily by a meteorolog-
ist in the Icelandic Television.
The monthly issues of Veðráttan were published for the months Sept. 1989-July 1990 and
annuai summary for 1989.
