Summary of the annual report of the Icelandic Meteorological Office 1992.
The Icelandic Meteorological Office was divided into the following divisions:
Administration, forecasting, computer, climatological, meteorological research, instruments
and observations, geophysical, aviation observation, avalanche and sea ice divisions. 66
personnel positions were occupied at the end of the year.
The number of stations was as follows: 49 synoptic, 35 climatological and 41 precipitation
stations. 3 of the synoptic stations were only operated in the summer. At 5 of the stations
agrometeorological observations were made. Two stations were operated only for
observations of wind and 2 only for measurements of duration of bright sunshine.
Weather messages were sent from 36 Icelandic ships. Upper air observations were made
at Keflavík airport at 12 and 24 GMT and in January observations were also made at 6 and
18 GMT. The total number of radiosonde observations (RAOB) was 786 and wind
observations (RAWIN) were 783. At the station írafoss samples were collected for chemical
analysis of some major pollutants in air and precipitation. Ozone observations were made
regularly at Reykjavík. 23 seismological stations were operated, 7 borehole strainmeter
stations and 2 gravimeter stations.
Weather reports and forecasts for Iceland and the surrounding sea banks were broadcast 9
times daily January-September and 8 times daily October-December. Storm warnings and
an abridged forecast for the country were broadcast 6 times during the day in October-
December on Channel 2. Forecasts with 48 and 72 hours validity period were issued daily
January-September and forecasts with 48, 72 and 96 hours validity 4 times daily October-
December. Special voice broadcasts on short wave from coastal stations intended for shipping
were 4 times daily. Forecasts for the banks were broadcast in English 4 times daily. Weather
maps were presented daily by a meteorologist in the Icelandic State Television.
The monthly issues of Veðráttan were published for the months April-December 1991
and annual summary for 1991.
